Yeah, in older games it was actually rewarding to do so.
Nowaydays, you won't find anything, can't get any other way than you are supposed to (Blocked by invisible walls), or game even punishes you...

In the olden days, you had to draw your self a map of where you had been and all the things you had come across, just to make it around a world built like a maze. Games like Rogue, and most Rogue Likes after it.
