For all those wondering, it's not that Spore was a terrible game all on its own. It is that it was meant to be a completely amazing game with realistic mechanics for animals (such as dragging a carcass away to your nest in order to eat safely) and was supposed to be at least somewhat scientifically accurate with evolution. But instead, they made everything about it cartoony and made each stage in the game a repetitive mini game. And the end stage is not worth playing past the first hour.
Again, not a bad game. But if you followed it from it's start and were anticipating it, it was the biggest disappointment in gaming history, probably akin to what some oldfags might have felt with the new Duke Nukem
Totally agree, Spore is one of the few games I actually went to a store at Midnight and bought because it sounded so amazing. It was pretty fun and an alright game, but it was so disappointing for what it was supposed to be.
Biggest disappointment? I'd definitely go with Dragon Age 2, without any doubt. Spore takes a shared second place with Fable 3 (don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Fable 3 - but I think Molyneux doesn't posses an anus and has to get rid of his **** via his mouth).
Yeah, I came here to say the same thing. Dragon Age 2 was an inexcusable abomination. The fact that a company with a pedigree like Bioware pumped out that afterbirth of a game is insulting. It kind of ruined the franchise for me.
Inquisition was pretty good and I found myself moderately enjoying Dragon Age 2 postexperience once I started thinking of it as a small title made as an introduction to Inquisition (because storywise, it serves that purpose really well).
Now, thinking of it as a AAA title for full price that's supposed to be able to stand on its own legs...
Well, that's not something I want to think about. ****** characters in a ****** town facing ****** (and few) enemies with ****** animations, ****** gameplay (although the combat could be enjoyable at times) with a ****** story (until connected to Inquisition, but no one wants a 6 hour introduction).
Origins is still by far the best in the series.
i remember the 2007 demo or w/e it was i had watched, i was so ******* hype, and i seen almost no new footage of the game prior to launch, i got it the day of and was just so utterly disappointed with it. such trash compared to what was originally shown.
Meh I do agree with your whole point but it was still pretty bad *as well* as not being what was "promised".
But yea.. supposed to be evolution/natural selection. I thought you'd get some randomly generated land and say your creature swam a long distance the babies would have small gills, or if it repeatedly carried stuff, more muscle mass etc. But yea... more like "YOU GOT A LOL POINT - HOW ABOUT A FACE ARM AND A LEAF KNEE?"
I got Spore during this year's summer sale, and you're totally right. The Civilization phase is just not fun at all, I've never managed to get passed it to the galactic phase, which I hear is the best phase. But even then everything up to Civilization phase was lacking, and the charm of making some wild and whacky creature wears off after like, the first 2 attempts, especially with how restrictive the "Creature building" is.
although imo if it came out like 5 years later it'd be right up there with minecraft in terms of community & youtube following.
> I've never managed to get passed it to the galactic phase
Dude, when I was like 10 or 11 playing Spore, I couldn't figure out how to save whenever I was in the galactic stage, so I would go as far as I could in it, and the next day, I started back from the beginning and went all the way from the cell stage again. You have a serious case of git gud
No, he said it wasn't fun, not that it was challenging. I've also never made it that far. The first two stages are alright, after that it becomes mass ass.
the end of it is so replayable that it's basically "galactic trader simulator". once you get to the centre of the galaxy you 'meet' the original aliens and they give you weird-ass tech but in such a limited supply that you never even use it and the last stage of evolution is just so damn repetitive- what's more is that no matter what you do, you can never appease the cyborgs, or even enter their space without being straight-up attacked on the spot, even when doing missions for them, even when collecting bounties from them!
the game in its entirety is simply broken ass **** .
There were a lot more parts back then. I mean, don't get me wrong, they basically polished and shaved off stuff for the creature creator, but what they were originally promising was really not what they gave (as EA became known to do).
It's still around. www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=all
It's not what it used to be, but I guess they haven't shut down servers yet and players are still sharing their stuff on the sporepedia
>23 Wasn't over hyped, EA basically forced the it to be released before it was finished.
Also it was going to be more scientific, but EA **** on that and made all 'cute' Personally i still think it's an 8/10 game
It's really hard to explain the intense disappointment from the point of view of someone such as myself, who had been hyped as **** for the game since the E3 preview. I was one of the first people to get my hands on a copy of the leaked creature creator, and I purchased the game itself too. It was.. enjoyable, I suppose. But compared to what they showed off? It was like a punch in the dick. Spore is the single largest reason that my hatred for EA still burns to this day.

It was supposed to be Maxis' most detailed and content-rich game, and Will Wright's dream game.
But then EA started interfering, more than half of the game's content got cut out and what was left had no time to get polished because EA wanted it to be released way sooner than the dev team planned.
Naturally, anyone who has played the game and followed it's development process is extremely angry and sad about it at the same time, including myself.
Nothing wrong with liking it, so did I.
But if you knew what it was originally planned to be, you'd be upset with it as well.
In the initial design all stages had content that'd rival the space stage, not to mention the stuff that also got cut out from the space stage, with at least one more stage planned (aquatic stage).
Exactly this. I struggled a bit in my explanation above, but here it is for me. Spore could have been the game to end games, but what we got was pacman and dumbed down Civ.
they ruined what could have been the best evolution game ever, what hundreds of thousands were waiting for, and ruined will wrights dreams.
its not that low on the list.
Spore was ok I guess. I only wished they didn't make it a cartoony kids game and put more focus on the stages other than space. Great game for designing your own **** though. The creating part is top quality.
Oh well, I'm a fool for expecting a serious game from ******* Will Wright.
But all the science aspects were from Will Wright, the original prototypes he showed were his own creations. Spore was really supposed the be his Magnum Opus. Blame EA for stepping in and deciding that actual science and strategy was 'too complex/difficult' for a wider audience, cutting most of the good stuff in production, and forcing it to be released before it was ready.
I followed spore since they first announced its development, even though i love the released game, the one they had in development was infinitely better.
Spore literally had the potential to be one of the greatest games to go down in history.
I see it all too often with the gaming industry these days (I'm looking at you Bethesda)
Dumbing down and catering to the filthy casuals, and money grubbing.
Not to mention all this "lets make games for kiddies with no explicit themes"
So many games have no ambition, stray away from controversy, and play it safe.
As a whole it's boring as hell.
But at least we have a few gems every now and then.
im sorry but this is one of my biggest complaints about gamers. the target audience is not you. dont get me wrong you are in the target audience. just like youre in the target audience for a music festival. i see way too many people nitpick games and miss the point that its the gaming industry.
The hardcore audience is the most loyal market willing to spend money. Anybody in business knows how stupid it is to betray your loyal customers. When profits seeking are prioritized over quality, your product suffers.
you and i both know how dumb an argument that is. remember the wii and nintendo ds? most of its library were casual ******** and guess what it stomped the competition. the plane and simple fact is that while the product might be suffering people are still going to buy it. EA sports is the most garbage group of game developers and they bring in millions of sales every year. ubisoft and activision do all of the things people claim is an EA thing and they still bring in millions. so youre right the hardcore fans who are trying to find a perfect game are upset. but the real target audience, people who play the game for fun and only have one criteria fro a game being good. thats the real target audience. the people on funnyjunk and the rest of the internet who want to **** on games that are fun as hell because "i dont like having a voiced protaganist" are really the least fo their concerns
look ive argued with you enough in the past so im just going to end it here. i think your opinion is **** because you think you set the measuring **** . you think my opinion is **** because im ok with the way things are. this is every one of our arguments and were both right and were both wrong. go get high and beat a trany to death or whatever you do to have fun. just go have fun dude
I'm bored, with most of the industry, just like I'm bored by most things in this "modern" world. Fun things are fun, boring things aren't. Casualized, simple, play-it-safe, meaningless games are not fun.
