It's still around. www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=all
It's not what it used to be, but I guess they haven't shut down servers yet and players are still sharing their stuff on the sporepedia

The initial demo video (which was like 2 years before it was released) had more content than the released game essentially.
It's really hard to explain the intense disappointment from the point of view of someone such as myself, who had been hyped as **** for the game since the E3 preview. I was one of the first people to get my hands on a copy of the leaked creature creator, and I purchased the game itself too. It was.. enjoyable, I suppose. But compared to what they showed off? It was like a punch in the dick. Spore is the single largest reason that my hatred for EA still burns to this day.
I bought it recently.
It sucks at pretty much everything but if you ever wanted to make sentient life shaped as dicks then this is your tihng.

It was supposed to be Maxis' most detailed and content-rich game, and Will Wright's dream game.
But then EA started interfering, more than half of the game's content got cut out and what was left had no time to get polished because EA wanted it to be released way sooner than the dev team planned.
Naturally, anyone who has played the game and followed it's development process is extremely angry and sad about it at the same time, including myself.

Nothing wrong with liking it, so did I.
But if you knew what it was originally planned to be, you'd be upset with it as well.
In the initial design all stages had content that'd rival the space stage, not to mention the stuff that also got cut out from the space stage, with at least one more stage planned (aquatic stage).
