Zelda is named after the wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Zelda Fitzgerald.

"She was a famous and beautiful woman from all accounts, and I liked the sound of her name. So I took the liberty of using her name for the very first Zelda title." - Shigeru Miyamoto

Miyamoto actually named Zelda after F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife Zelda

"Hearing of American novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife Zelda, Miyamoto thought the name sounded "pleasant and significant".[22] Paying tribute, he chose to name the princess after her, and titled his creation The Legend of Zelda."

The famous Zelda Fitzgerald was a writers wife. He based a story of her in the story that gave Myamoto the idea for the Legend of Zelda. The scenery of the game was the area he use to play as a child.

Delta in Japanese Katakana would be "Deruta", not "Zeruda".

Well now that explains why in FF9 Zidane was like "Neither a Cloud or a Squall can take you from me." I just thought that it was a reference to the characters when I was younger.

Samus. That's the only name you'll hear. Samus. It means the end and the death. Samus. I am Samus. Samus is all around you. Samus is the man beside you. Samus will gnaw on your bones. Look out! Samus is here.

This is what I immediately thought of when I saw the name Samus. Samus Aran came second.

when i was little and first played FF8 i thought Squall looked like a Rolf and the name fit so perfectly i've never been able to call him anything else

The first one's bullcrap. Zelda in katakana is Zeruda. Also, Celes is named after the asteroid Ceres, which in Japanese can be romanized either way.
