Monsters bodies are made mostly of magic, human bodies are made mostly of well, meat. We are strong enough to have "determination" whereas their bodies can't. So they melt and fuse and it's ******* weird.
Alphys played God
Literally created something the Geneva convention would have a stroke about
Everyone is like 'k lol'
Has a **** taste in anime
Alphys is literally worse than Chara
The monsters were dying anyway. They had 'Fallen down' which is sort of like a coma state before the monster dies. she tried to save them with determination but didnt account for the magic nature of the monsters body causing them to lose their physical forms. They were going to die anyway, atleast this way they still get to be with their loved ones for a little longer.
Screwed up as it was, she didn't plan on making the amalgamates, she was trying to harness soul-power to break the barrier.
The fact they all reanimated then melted then amalgamated was everything going wrong. So she didn't play god and even if she likes **** anime she's probably not as bad as little miss ******************************************************************************** ou
Still a terrible person though, happy amalgamates and families or not.
She wasn't even trying to break the barrier, the amalgamates were part of a preliminary experiment to see if monsters could accept artificial determination at all, with the added benefit of saving a lot of monsters that were near death.
She was trying to break the barrier, her initial reports explain how the barrier is formed of Soul Power and requires a greater amount of soul power to break it. The barrier's power is equivalent to 7 human souls, but she has a lack of human souls.
We're told that it's impossible for a monster to take a monster's soul, after that it's explained that taking the soul of a living monster wouldn't be viable due to difficulty and the power required. After this she concludes that she should work with what the underground does have, the souls of monsters.
Due to this she requested the remains of monsters that had 'fallen down' the state they go into between dying and turning into dust, she then injected the corpses with Determination (which allows a human soul to linger after dying) in order to have their souls stick around long enough to be harvested, the experiment fails when the corpses don't turn into dust and later reanimate.
she calls the experiment a failure but had a happy outcome, then the subjects start melting due to their magical forms being unable to handle determination the same way humans physical bodies can.
tl;dr - she wanted to harvest their souls, the reanimation>melting>amalgamates was actually pretty much the opposite of what she wanted
Further exposition states that she was uncertain monsters' bodies could sustain determination. This experiment was intended as the first in a series, aiming to prove whether a monster's body could maintain integrity after being injected with determination, or if the determination would even take root in the first place.
Though breaking the barrier was her motivation, the experiment was intended as nothing more than proof of concept.
It's her motivation and the object of the experiment, the spoiler has some relevant lab entries in order.
_**ENTRY NUMBER 1: This is it... Time to do what the King has asked me to do. I will create the power to free us all. I will unleash the power of the SOUL.
ENTRY NUMBER 2: The barrier is locked by SOUL power.. Unfortunately, this power cannot be recreated artificially. SOUL power can only be derived from what was once living. So, to create more, we will have to use what we have now... The SOULs of monsters.
ENTRY NUMBER 6: ASGORE asked everyone outside the city for monsters that had "fallen down." Their bodies came in today. They're still comatose... And soon, they'll all turn into dust. But what happens if I inject "determination" into them? If their SOULS persist after they perish, then... Freedom might be closer than we all thought.
ENTRY NUMBER 15: Seems like this research was a dead end... But at least we got a happy ending out of it...? I sent the SOULS and the vessel back to ASGORE. And I called all of the families and told them everyone's alive. I'll send everyone back tomorrow.
ENTRY NUMBER 14: Everyone that had fallen down... ... has woken up. They're all walking around and talking like nothing is wrong. I thought they were goners...?
ENTRY NUMBER 16: no No NO NO NO NO
ENTRY NUMBER 17: monsters' physical forms can't handle "determination" like humans' can. with too much determination, our bodies begin to break down. everyone's melted together...

She makes a theory about using monster souls > she uses determination as a way to harvest souls > it fails, corpses reanimate > reanimated people melt and amalgamate > theory about monsters being unable to handle determination.
the rest of the true lab entries are here undertale.wikia.com/wiki/True_Lab
also in finding this out I've weirded myself out, I swear I read Alphys' entry 17 on my run which apparently shouldn't be possible...
That exposition is in response to the subjects melting, she sees the reanimated monsters melt and is forced to search for an explanation, the one she settles on is that Monster bodies are unable to handle determination since they aren't solid. which is why people think neutral route dying undyne manages to pull off her 'I will not die speech' but quickly turns into a puddle
also it's real determination she uses, the determination extractor (draconic skull looking thing) is there to harvest it.
What i like about alphys is that shes probbly the most human character in the game, ironically enough, Now here me out here, The accidental creation of the amalgamates completely scarred her emotionally and completely changed her personality from what could've been a kinda awkard but at the same time smart nerd, to a completely emotional Wreck, feeling that she needs to lie about everything because of this one accident, Lets not also forget that during one of the neutral endings shes implied to commit suicide due to her failures, this honestly is why i think alphys is one of the best written characters in the game, she did a horrible mistake and thus she was scarred for life thus turning her into a complete wreck, i'm not going to pretend shes a perfect character She is actually kinda annoying sometimes But she certainly is one of the most human, which is why shes one of my favorite characters in the game if not my actual favorite. But i'm just a regular bloke on the internet, so why should you listen to me right? LOL.
Probably because she has the heaviest backstory, making you feel with her. The other characters have some regular flaws, like being too careless, too naive or too stubborn, while Alphys is a legitimate wreck.
One thing that keeps bothering me in Undertale, particularly in genocide run, is - careful, spoiler - what happens with Sans' soul after you kill him? You never see it break, you only hear the off-screen sound of body's death animation.
Don't forget that killing him raises your LV to 20. However, LV is implied to be a mental stat, rather than something physical. The more LV you have, the easier it becomes to distance yourself. I guess thinking you killed someone could raise your LV too..
Sans is a boss monster.
He's also mentioned to be the only monster able to defeat Flowey.
He's probably the strongest monster as we know it, but he's too laid back to actually manifest it. Unless you go full genocide. But we all know you should never go full genocide.
Another fun fact is, as stated by wiki, that when you defeat Sans, your monster kill count doesn't raise, unlike with every single other kill that you make.
Sans isn't a boss monster though. It's not like boss monsters are just monsters which are really strong, they're an actual type. Sans is a skeleton and is actually the weakest monster. He just knows how to cheat the system.
Sans is not actually strong, though. He IS the weakest monster, remember? 1hp, 1def, 1dmg. he only packs a punch because he is smart. he cheats during the fight, ignoring your invincibility frames, applying dot damage and dodging your hits ( the only monster to actually dodge anything at all ). He's just another monster. The only difference is that he's smart and knows how the battle system and the game world work, so he abuses his knowledge to overpower you.
My thoughts on it are kinda along the line of, we know he CAN teleport, but we never see him do it. So when he gets out of sight he ports to Grillby's and sits there. Where his friends used to be. Alone.
