It is because Sans knows that the world has been reset before and it will happen again.
He cannot remember anything from the previous worlds but he knows that they have existed and been reset.
He is that way because he knws that everything he does is futile and doesn't matter because the world will be reset in the future.
That aspect of him makes people sympathize with him and love him

I would say he is more depressed then a nihilist.
and in any case his nihilism is more connected to the fact that the world is actually beeing reset and nothing he does will have any consequences for himself or others because it will all be undone.

thechosentroll (01/06/2016) [-] Nihilism is the philosophy that life is pointless, nothing you do matters and ultimately your existence is completely meaningless. He's sad, because he knows that nothing he dies matters and his existence is completely meaningless, because it'll just keep resetting over and over again. And depression and nihilism are not mutually exclusive. In fact, it can be a cause of depression. Like it is in his case.
