schneidend (12/17/2015) [-] Anybody who worries about whether a fanbase is "cancerous" has the mental faculties of a grade schooler. Who cares what Pewdiepie plays? Watch him or don't. Who cares about Undertale? Play it or don't. Any other course of action, like making content about it on FJ like it's news-worthy, is the only thing that's cancerous. All this Us vs. Them ********* does is make gaming, anime, and other Internet sub-culture more toxic and less fun. You think your opinions are informed, of a high standard, and overall just plain superior, but it's really just an escalating arms race of who can be the most hyperbolic asshole, hate the most things, and **** on the most people. If you actually hated Pewdiepie, like genuinely disliked who he is and what he does, you wouldn't ADVERTISE HIS NEXT ******* VIDEO ON AN INTERNET FORUM!
So, basically, you're morons.

Level with me for a second:
Pewdiepie does what he does for money. He does not care about Undertale. It's become a cult classic in a short time, and all it is, is publicity to try to cash in on more viewers who give him money.
His fans have utterly no interest in Undertale, nor will they care to take the time to understand it's qualities that the rest of the community enjoys it for. All they will care about is that thier god-king Felix played it and spouted out ****** irrelevant jokes.
You're right in that the point of the community is to keep it fun for other people in the community long after the content of rhe game has been completed. But the community being flooded by people who do not care about Undertale, who do not care to understand Undertale, will do nothing but make it less fun for the earnest members of the community.
The community should be a friendly place for people to enjoy themselves in, but a certain amount of gatekeeping and quality control is just common sense to give security to the fun of the people who were already there.
You wouldn't and shouldn't let a registered sex offender into Chuck E. Cheese. Excuse the exaggerated metaphor but it's best I have. That's common sense gatekeeping.
Likewise, the last thing the Undertale community needs --one already hated by most outsiders-- is to be filled with posers by someone looking to for monetary gain. If the community becomes unbearable to even us, then where left do we have to go?

But he donates a lot of that money to charity though, so loose some win some.

As does almost anyone else looking to boost their PR. Any time someone brings up that Pewdiepie is **** , someone goes "he donates to charity" and people do the golf clap and some actually go to get sucked into his ****** , cancerous fandom.
Not everyone donates to charity because they have pure intentions. Most don't. Especially if you KNOW they're doing it. That means they want people to know what they're doing. "Look at me I'm doing the nice guy things!" PR, all of it. It's not like he earned that much money in the first place. Least he could do is give most of it away.

Ulterior motives do not cancel out the fact that they are doing a good deed. I don't give a **** if they are doing it for a PR boost, it helps people.
"Pewdiepie does what he does for money. He does not care about Undertale. It's become a cult classic in a short time, and all it is, is publicity to try to cash in on more viewers who give him money. "
Pewdiepie does what he does for money, like literally everybody else on the planet who has a job. That doesn't mean he doesn't care about video games, just because he is essentially paid to play them. If he's going to play Undertale, it's probably because he's heard about it and likes what he's heard, like most people who played Undertale. He's a pretty cool, normal guy, who just happens to have become financially well-off in a weird, new way that our technology has only recently made possible. He also donates a ton of money to charity and works with charitable organizations. He's just some dude who got lucky, not Satan.
"His fans have utterly no interest in Undertale, nor will they care to take the time to understand it's qualities that the rest of the community enjoys it for. All they will care about is that thier god-king Felix played it and spouted out ****** irrelevant jokes."
That's kind of a big, dumbass generalization to make about several million people. I've watched a few of his videos, liked his Amnesia and Happy Wheels videos, but not much else. I think he's a fun guy and a good person. So, arguably, I'm a fan. I care about Undertale. Not enough to play it any time soon, but I've pieced together enough of it to gain a substantial appreciation for its charm and design goals, and its place in video gaming as an art piece.

Again, stupid generalization, especially considering the only people among Pewdiepie's fans who get involved in the community will probably be people who saw it, liked it, and decided to try it for themselves. How are they less of a fan of Undertale than you just because they heard about it from a particular source? How would your dedication be superior and more genuine than theirs? That's pretension talking. Stop it. Don't be a cunt.

Ban people from your forums or blogs who actually break the rules. Don't **** all over people who are new and haven't taken as many blue pills as you, yet. Again, don't be a cunt. A lack of, and in fact an opposition to, inclusiveness is still a huge problem in many fandoms like video games, tabletop games, anime, and other niche communities. The solution is to stop being part of the problem. It's an indy game. Not everybody has heard of it yet. Your appreciation of it isn't somehow better just because you heard of it first.
"You wouldn't and shouldn't let a registered sex offender into Chuck E. Cheese. Excuse the exaggerated metaphor but it's best I have. That's common sense gatekeeping."
So, you recognize that it's a bad metaphor, but still use it, anyway? Don't be stupid. New fans aren't pedophiles. They just aren't as immersed or invested as you, at least not yet. Treating them like lepers will discourage them. That's how you create trolls and a poor impression of a fandom, then word of mouth takes its natural course.
"Likewise, the last thing the Undertale community needs --one already hated by most outsiders-- is to be filled with posers by someone looking to for monetary gain. If the community becomes unbearable to even us, then where left do we have to go?"
I think my other replies have illustrated why this is a ******* retarded mode of thinking. But, if not, feel free to ask.

This... is surprisingly well thought out. Thing is... as an Undertale fan myself, I know we can't win that "war." As with everything else on the internet, nothing is sacred. More importantly... No one's taking the game away from you. Or the friends you made and share it with due to it. You as a person aren't changing, just the overall view others have of your interest. And so what? Eventually, you'll tire of it and it'll be a fond memory and not much else. Just like everything you enjoyed as a kid. It's in your nature to move on and grow. Just... enjoy what you get from it for now, ok? It was, and still is a great game, with memorable characters. Take it at face value and smile because you got to experience it, and still can. Don't push it on people who don't want it, and ignore the people who give you **** for talking about it. People are capable of politely declining conversations about it. If they don't give you that tiny common courtesy, then they're not worth talking to anyways. As for PewDiePie.... he's not stopping. He won't stop. He steps on artwork and garbage alike with little differentiation and makes farting noises while doing it. It's his job to be a horrible person on camera. Little kids are his target audience and he knows that. A lot like a clown.... the people who take him seriously aren't really the smartest.

Well you see that's the thing, the game isn't going to be taken from us, but for many of us, there's no point in continuing the game itself. The community is largely conversing hypothetical what-if scenarios in the forms of these fan comics we contantly share, and accentuating the parts of the game we enjoyed through that. There's not necessarily friends made that we would be able to easily find and commune with privately should the community actually fall apart from an influx of very differently behaving outsiders, which is why I'm so concrete about the community needing to be consistent. I love all of the autistic ************* that join me in *********** and theorizing Undertale and it would be impossible for me to track them all, should the community somehow collapse.
But thanks for your advice, everything has to eventually die, I'd juat prefer it be with a happy wimper instead of a hellish bang, to leave the memories fonder.
I kinda feel sorry for Felix though, it's like he's stuck in clown hell.

I'll be real with you. I played the game twice. Two 3 to 4 hour sessions. Once neutral. Then pacifist. I have not touched it since. Because i have gotten all I want out of the subject material for now. I may go back and play it some time, but only for nostalgia, updates, and picking something apart. The sheer joy of playing it for the first time is over. And that's ok. It doesn't mean I don't still talk about it. Hell, I masquerade on steam as "Prince Goat Kid" now and again because it's fun to play the part. I don't force it on people or act it out mid game, but if someone gets the reference or plays along, I'll play back. I even create artwork sometimes of it when the mood strikes. Additional fans that I don't agree with won't stop me from doing any of that until I feel I have let this fanaticism run its' course. The community won't die just because of some pewdiepie kids. If anything, it'll grow. People aren't ironclad archetypes in fleshy suits. They may see the community how it is and conform to it. Not all of them will, but a large number will.
As for Felix...? He's rich. He doesn't care what people think of him. Don't feel bad for him; He made money by playing off of the easiest audience in the world.
