I personally get confused when people make Asgore as a weak man, he wields a ******* trident for god's sake.

Well, according to this undertale.wikia.com/wiki/Toriel#Main_Story all the other kids Asgore killed also had to pass through Toriel. Not a single one stayed though.
Yes, just because he was told off by his ex-wife, who I want to get back together, doesn't mean that he's weak
but the queens reasoning is sound, while he is a good king for the most part he is rather weak willed
Every single person in the underground is expecting him to free them from the underground, his wife left him, his kids are dead, he's a broken man who needs to be rebuilt again

I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY ASGORE DECIDED NOT TO SIMPLY ABSORB ONE HUMAN SOUL, GO ABOVE GROUND, COLLECT 6 MORE AND RETURN LIKE TORIEL SAID. HE PROBABLY FEARED THAT THE HUMANS WOULD HAVE A SIMILAR REACTION TO WHEN ASRIEL WENT TO THE SURFACE AND THAT WAS WHEN THEY ONLY ASSUMED THAT HE HAD KILLED CHARA. IMAGINE HOW ANGRY THE HUMANS WOULD BE HAD THEIR ASSUMPTIONS BE CONFIRMED, THEN MULTIPLIED BY 6. I THINK THE LAST THING THE KING WANTED WAS ANOTHER MONSTER GENOCIDE...
dude was planning a human genocide so that idea is out, what makes more sense is that he did not want to actually kill anyone but had to in order to keep his promise, he just hoped no more humans would fall down so his people would keep being hopeful while no one had to die

The answer is this: He didn't really want to kill humanity.
The promise he made was done out of the fresh anger and pain of losing both of his children. But remember, he already knew how to love humans.
Chara was his adopted child, who he LOVED.
So he makes a dumb promise out of anger and everyone around him latches onto it as their source of hope. Now, he can't go back on it or else he lets down his people and takes their hope away. (Not good.)
But if he carries out his plan, then he is killing humans, who he doesn't actually want to kill. He knows that killing one human would be the same as killing his adopted child. So why would he go out and do it?
He wouldn't.
He kills the next human who comes down out of duty. He has to. But he doesn't go out. Why?
For a myriad of excuses that all mean one thing:
He wants FATE to decide. He doesn't want to be the one who decides whether or not all the humans die.
That's why he destroys your Mercy button. Not only can he not bring him self to kill a human who refuses to fight him, but it makes the stakes simple:
If he can kill you, then Fate decided his cause was just, and he can proceed. He has been in the right all along, as evidenced by Fate providing the means to his goal even when he didn't try for it.
If he loses, then he is punished for his sins. His promise was just as wrong as he feels it was, and Fate has dealt him the punishment he so rightly deserves.
Asgore is physically powerful, and obviously someone who is very loving and caring by nature, and is torn between two loves:
The love of his human child, and the love of his people and his own son.
And when Toriel interferes, he stops. Why? Because Fate put her there and stopped it. Fate decided that his plan was as sinful as he believed. It isn't news to him that he could have gone out and taken 6 more souls. He just couldn't bring himself to do it.
Toriel is another interesting piece in this puzzle, but it likely stems from her bitterness that he would so readily kill a bunch of humans after having one as his child. And then when he won't even stick to his word on that, it just exacerbates the problem. He'll keep killing individual humans but won't go through on his promise. So she leaves him.
I think Asgore is, strangely enough, the most human character in the game. People do stuff like that ALL THE TIME. They leave decisions up to chance if they are scared to make the choice.
Or maybe I read too deep into this **** .

This is what honestly makes Asgore one of my favorite characters in the game. He's so deep and you can see he cares about everyone. But the truth is that he knows he is a king and he must do what he must do, even if he regrets it.
