R.I.P. Lonesome George. "In 1971, it was discovered that the subspecies had been completely wiped out, with the exception of a single male known as Lonesome George. Efforts were made to mate Lonesome George with other subspecies, but no viable eggs were produced. Lonesome George died on 24 June 2012. The subspecies is believed to have become extinct; however, the possibility of finding a remaining individual outside of Pinta Island
