I haven't read the Death of the Family series. Can someone tell me why his face looks like it's just stapled on? Because that shit is terrifying

If i recall the Joker fell into a chemical vat, scaring his face. he underwent reconstructive surgery but they couldnt fix the "grin". He quite liked it, and after this went increasingly insane. Why, im not sure. Maybe the chemicals?
Anyway, if i remember that part correctly this would just be a much more disfigured face. Where the reconstructive surgery wasnt handled by a surgeon, but more like a 10year old on acid. Or the Joker himself.
