I was under the impression that it would as well. And it seems that some astronauts DO breathe 100% O2 for weeks at a time without any problem. The issues occur when it is inhaled under high pressure (4x a standard atmosphere), like scuba diving, or a hyperbaric chamber for premature babies.

Though we were both wrong, I am glad this exchange occured. mcderper thumbed in an attempt to fix his wrongly acquired thumb deficit.

At work if we rocked up hungover the medics would let us inhale pure oxygen for ten minutes to fix us right up. I don't think it was dangerous at all. It made you feel good, like a mild high

From what I can read, breathing pure oxygen at normal pressure for a prolonged amount of time will cause a bunch of problems (not deadly, but problems) like fluid building up in your lungs, along with some tissue damage.
Also said that some astronauts in the Apollo missions breathed pure oxygen at reduced pressure for 10 days without any problems.
