I think what they mean is that it's not made in some ******* lab somewhere. Which is true it was grown in the ground. But, smoking it is not its original purpose, so that way, it's not natural.
I know this didn't help.

Things may be synthesized, but many of them are natural. Poppies and coca leaves make for the best examples.

Wouldn't call myself an expert either. Poppies have been used for many purposes throughout time for various uses including opium, morphine, and heroine. I can't say when heroine came to be, but the former two have been around for a good amount of time. Opium was pretty big back in the day.   
   
Before the Spaniards colonized South America, coca leaves were commonly chewed to alleviate aches, pains, and everything in between. Essentially the same way we would use a tylenol or a black family would use robitussin.
