Stoners, to me, are the kind of people who walk around with pot-leaf shirts, wallets, hats, all that stuff, and talk about weed and being high all the time. And those are the annoying kind.
And then there's pot smokers who just... smoke pot and that's it.

a stoner is some who goes to work, pays their taxes, is generally a good person tries to be the most lay appending citizen because if something happens the could be caught with possession.
i say this because i would call myself a stoner but i wish to join the military so i have quit smoke and to me stoner sounds better the a pothead

A stoner would much rather spend a Friday night getting high rather than going out. They also smoke weed every available opportunity.
Which implies being annoying, anyone who smokes weed every chance they get, is annoying in my opinion.
I've always used the word stoner for the useless type that shoves their obsession with weed in your face. All of the annoying idiots refer to themselves as stoners, most mature, working adults who smoke simply refer to themselves as "a man who smokes pot"
It's a totally different thing between the two.
It's just like girls who call themselves "gamers" because they want attention, or a girl who just says "Oh yeah, I play videogames sometimes"
There really is a big difference even if there shouldn't be.
