Its not "money" its "the love of money" and you can substitute any material object in for money, because if you love some object to the point that you are willing to sacrifice others to obtain it, its time to reevaluate your life choices.
#27 to #7 - vodnuth (04/28/2015) [-]
Plus it's "all kinds of evil"'which may seem irrelevant but there's a difference between "every evil ever" and "every type of evil has been caused by money"
#14 - anon (04/28/2015) [-]
If you would actually read the verse, it isn't that money is the root of all evil. It's the LOVE of money that is the root of all evil.

1 Timothy 6:10 KJV
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

capitalismmagazine.com/2002/08/franciscos-money-speech/

good read for anyone interested in analyzing the "money is the root of all evil" idea
#22 to #5 - hotpiss (04/28/2015) [-]
Does that article not make the same mistake as many others, "the love of money..." rather than money itself, being the root of all evil?
User avatar #28 to #22 - mikepetru (04/28/2015) [-]
But then what makes money itself evil? That article does address what is the root of money.
#29 to #28 - hotpiss (04/28/2015) [-]
Who's saying money is evil?
User avatar #30 to #29 - mikepetru (04/28/2015) [-]
You did...in your last post...you said the article makes the mistake of not addressing money itself as evil
#31 to #30 - hotpiss (04/28/2015) [-]
No I didn't, you misunderstood my comment.

Sorry if i wasn't clear, my point was the article is written as a response to the phrase "money is the root of all evil", which is incorrect, as it should be "the love of money is the root of all evil".

Am I making more sense now?
User avatar #32 to #31 - mikepetru (04/28/2015) [-]
Ah yes but the author begins with the misconception that is so commonly held and then deconstruct it
#33 to #32 - hotpiss (04/28/2015) [-]
I understand what the author is doing, it's just pointless, as the premise is wrong.

Goddamnit you beat me to it, I was just going to link it for the "So you think that money is the root of all evil? Have you ever asked what is the root of money?" segment.

Hands down one of the most influential speeches when I was growing up. Have to read it against someday.

Well, if God created everything, ain't he really the root of all evil too?
#40 to #26 - ripinkill (04/28/2015) [-]
Evil is not a creation. It is a twisting of god's creation into evil. Just like darkness is the absence of light, Evil is not a creation but a twisting abomination formed from creation.
User avatar #43 to #40 - minorian (04/28/2015) [-]
Something must have brought evil into the world, and he created that, so he is still technically the root, eh?
#45 to #43 - ripinkill (04/29/2015) [-]
God created Lucifer (who became satan of his own free will), and Lucifer took pride in his form and wanted to be greater than god, which was one of the first sins. Lucifer did this of his own free will. not God so he is not the root of evil, simply because he created it. Its like blaming a blacksmith for creating a knife designed for cutting vegetables and someone else uses that knife to murder someone and then blaming the crime on the blacksmith.
User avatar #47 to #45 - minorian (04/29/2015) [-]
This is all basic knowledge, and your analogy with the blacksmith and the knife works just as well with money and its creator
User avatar #41 to #40 - listerthepessimist (04/28/2015) [-]
but what could oppose God's will?
#46 to #41 - ripinkill (04/29/2015) [-]
Nothing can appose God's will. God's wants and wills are separate, as they can be in humans. God would want everything to function perfectly, however it is his will for his creations to have the power of free will. In according to this he will allow things to happen according to what his creations want, not what he wants. Will and want are two different things. sometimes people will combine their want and their will, but they are seperate.
User avatar #48 to #46 - listerthepessimist (04/29/2015) [-]
so God could make a perfect world, but doesn't?
#49 to #48 - ripinkill (04/30/2015) [-]
God already made a perfect world, and Satan imperfected it along with humans, God allows us to have the free will to do imperfect things. We are not robots that do exactly what god wants, otherwise the world would be perfect.
User avatar #50 to #49 - listerthepessimist (04/30/2015) [-]
But unless you do what God wants, there's an eternity of punishment to greet you
#51 to #50 - ripinkill (04/30/2015) [-]
According to the bible, the only thing he requires is, accepting the sacrifice of Jesus to pay for what ever you have done wrong in your life. You don't have to be a perfect person at all. He already payed for the ticket to heaven, all you have to do is accept the ticket, its free. Before Jesus died people had to try to be perfect, and sacrifice things to pay for their mistakes, once he payed though, the only thing required is to accept god's sacrifice as a free gift.
User avatar #52 to #51 - listerthepessimist (04/30/2015) [-]
will someone tell the catholics? sounds like confession is no longer required
#53 to #52 - ripinkill (04/30/2015) [-]
Yes I am referring to the christian bible, and according to it, yes confession is no longer required. In history when the catholic church was still gaining power in the world, the priests wanted more money and power, and confessions are a way to get that.
By Telling people the only way to be cleansed is to confess to a priest, and some priests require to be payed money to pray for dead relatives to get to heaven, was a great way to become leaders and have power, which the catholic church had a lot of in the past, and even today in some ways. In catholic practice people pray to multiple people, not just god. They pray to saints, however it says no where in the original scripts to pray to people, but to the one god from Judaism (or Islam for that matter)..
User avatar #54 to #53 - listerthepessimist (04/30/2015) [-]
I'm not surprised the catholics aren't going by the book tbh, they're far too fond of idol worship

but still, it's an odd situation isn't it? a person can be as despicable as they please, as long as they accept the 'saviour'
#55 to #54 - ripinkill (04/30/2015) [-]
Yes god payed for all sin. But if you truly accept the sacrifice, it also causes a heart of repentance, because you must first recognize you are in need of saving. This will not cause you to never do evil things again, but it should cause you to live a life style that doesn't revolve around doing evil things. For example a burglar/murderer can still go to heaven, just as easily as anyone else, even Hitler. But if they continue their way of life, without any change, then most likely they did not truly accept the gift, to change themselves, they just want to continue doing evil and still get the benefits. You should want to change for the better, not change just to save yourself from hell. But you are correct a person could be the most despicable, but if they repent and admit themselves being despicable and needing to be saved, by gods sacrifice they will be saved just like anyone else. Romans 3:23 verse "for all have sinned"
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" If you have truly accepted you will want to change.

I just wrote verses so you know i'm not making this up in my head, so you know the source.
