Lately, the series hasn't been releasing episodes according to a regular schedule; rather, the episodes are released in groups spaced out with a somewhat lengthy hiatus between each. These groups are referred to as "Steven Bombs", and usually consist of five episodes released over the course of a week, Monday to Friday.
If you think about it the stevenbomb tactic is simultaneously really good and really bad strategy.
On the one hand, the hardcore fans are kept loyal through an infinite loop of anticipation followed by fleeting satisfaction, followed by more anticipation, etc... Each stevenbomb feels like a little treat, with the wait period serving to build the hype.
On the other hand, casual viewers may not have the patience to keep up with a show that releases episodes once every other month, and just forget about it and move onto something else.
In short, stevenbombs serve to keep the loyal fanbase loyal, but probably aren't effective at drawing in and keeping a wider audience. But this is just conjecture.
That said the build-up beforehand /can/ attract new faces to the scene, and a hiatus allows for custom release dates so the show doesn't run out too quickly between production. A weekly schedule is hard to keep up with if you start running out of material.
I think we were half-way through Season 1 when I decided to start watching the series, following yet another Steven Universe comp during mid-hiatus hype, just to see what all the fuss was about. I'm glad I did.
I hope it never ends. I just want everyone to be crystal gems so bad. especially big buff cheeto puff. COME ON DAMN YOU, I WANT YOU TO SING A ******* HAPPY SON WITH THE OTHER SPACE ROCKS.
