Those Little Thing. Pt 30.
Never thought, when I started these, that I would make it to 30. I thought maybe I'd be making a dozen or so little entries looking at the episodes and that would be it. Then I started looking back, watching episodes carefully and checking Tumblr to see what other people had seen. I had no idea that these episodes had so much to them.
And I'm enjoying it so much.
So enjoy this latest entry before the latest Steven Bomb consumes us all.
Also, I'm tempted, but won't be making a special look at the episodes of the Steven bomb the same way I did for Nightmare Hospital. We're all just going to have to wait until I get to those in the regular run of Those Little Things. May take a while, but I'm going to make sure there are regular updates and no huge gaps like we've had recently.
Okay, now that's out the way, on to our look at Episode 39: Future Vision.

A lot of people on Tumblr believe that Ninja Squad and New Ninja Squad are references to Naruto and Naruto Shippuden respectively.
I haven't watched either show, so I'll take their word for it.

Amongst Steven's toys we get to see...
This little guy, who at first glance appears to be a reference to the Pokemon Jigglypuff. But also, (the picture isn't great so it's hard to see) the little figure has a star-like shape on its head. This may also make it a reference to the toy Furby, whose sensor was located in a decorative shape in its forehead.
There's also this little green guy, who I didn't get at first...
Thanks to the wiki we can learn it's a reference to Yoshi. the ridable lizard from the Super Mario franchise.
And finally we get Crying Pear from Steven's favourite show Crying Breakfast Friends.
It was way back in Episode 11 - Arcade Mania that Garnet's future vision was first hinted at when Pearl stated:
** Garnet just has heightened perception that guides us towards our mission objective**
This is the episode which confirms that she has Future Vision as an ability.
Hey! so do you remember the episode “Arcade Mania”? Remember when Garnet became completely enamored with the game?
Well, the entire “seeing into the future” thing explains all of it! The game was coded to have particularly repeated sequences, and Garnet used her powers to foresee the events, putting herself into a loop.
This way the number of opportunities for the “future vision” was narrowed down to one, placing our favorite alien in a focused and undisturbed trance~~~ pearlnet-punk.tumblr.com/
Pearl has a very matter-of-fact way of speaking to Steven, Amethyst will compliment him in more of a big sister or best friend kind of way. I love that it's the usually stoic Garnet who gives Steven the most loving comments.
Best Mom.
The scene that Garnet and Steven did a workout together is a parody of "Korean National Gymnastics" (국민체조).
The song at the scene was also in Korean. It says, "Let's workout. one, two, two, two, three, two, four, two...".
"Korean National Gymnastics" (국민체조).
Steven's eyebrow game is just too strong! No wonder Garnet can't say No to that face.
In Episode 12 - Giant Woman we learn Garnet is tough enough to swim in lava. A little hot coffee isn't going to bother her.
The whole world has guessed that these "wasps" are a reference to the pokemon, Beedrill. Steven's imagination has good taste in anime.
It's also important to note that Garnet finishes the scene with "And that's just a few off the top of my head" She's not even using any kind of future-vision at Steven's request. She's actually just thinking of realistic problems which could occur. I think it's her subtle way of trying to let Steven know that you don't need Future Vision to foresee problems and all he has to do is think about things calmly.

Steven's fear of being squashed by the donut is a reference to the pilot....
Where the Crystal Gems, and eventually the monster, are injured by the sign
"I never considered that you would be evil!"
A moment which the whole fandom chose to file under: Things I hope are not foreshadowing.
An inteeresting bit of trivia, this scene of Steven assembling a sandwich...
it's the same sandwich from Rebecca Sugar’s “Singles” animation from back in 2009.

"What could possibly happen to me on the roof?"
I have to admit, I facepalmed here. Has he really become so wound up with worry he can't see the obvious anymore?
It's raining, it's dark, there's lightning, and the roof isn't the safest place to be at the best of times. Come on Steven, you could easily figure out why you shouldn't be on the roof in this situation!
Tell me about it!
Welcome to life, Steven.
Every moment of every day, Garnet sees every possibility of Steven getting seriously hurt or dying and she has to make sure it doesn't happen.

Guys, let’s get real here. I absolutely love every version of Garnet. But this- when she gets vulnerable, especially in front of Steven- is the best version.
She saw the opportunity to get closer to him, even when they were already as close as a mother is to her son, and she took it. They all worried about whether or not they were the best choice to take care of Steven. But this episode, along with The Test, just proves even more that they are more than capable of doing so.
Yet again, Steven Universe shows that you can accomplish anything if you set your mind to it. Decide the path you’re going to take in life and make it your own. Because really, you’re the only one that can write your own destiny.

Now we move onto Episode 40 - On The Run. One of the heaviest episodes for feels and character development and plot growth. Until now stuff has been theorised and hinted at but we finally get a pretty big chunk of Gem lore.
The book series that Steven likes, No Home Boys, is based on the children book series The Hardy Boys and The Boxcar Children.
Both series were written before and during the Great Depression, which would explain the brothers' choice of a nomadic lifestyle.
Steven: "How long did you live here?"
Amethyst: "For a while, I guess. At least until I met your mom and the others."
It has been confirmed by the creators that Amethyst is the youngest of the Crystal Gems, at around 5,500 years old. She was one of the last Gems to emerge from the Kindergarten and she wasn't found until after the war.
The war ended about 5000 years ago, meaning Amethyst was probably alone for about 500 years.
The Gem Drill heavily resemble bacteriophages, a type of virus which reproduces by latching onto cells and injecting its DNA within the cell to absorb all it can to replicate itself and create more bacteriophages.
Just the visual of these giant machines told us a lot about Homeworld Gem society and its plans to cull the Earth for its resources in producing more Gems, much as viruses kill cells to replicate themselves.

Steven Universe doesn’t just show you things that make you sad; it shows you things that makes you happy, only to later show you how they’re actually sad, making you feel even worse.....
Haha, they “kept Amethyst”, because she’s unrefined and animalistic.
…Oh, they actually found and “kept” her, which is the root of hitherto unmentioned anxieties for her…
Haha, Greg is weirded out by a hot girl transforming into his son!
…Oh, she has a history of shapeshifting into his family members in order to torment him…

This has been mentioned before but it was a while ago so I'll mention it again. The holes in the cliff, and Amethyst's line are references to The Enigma of Amigara Fault - by Junji Ito
Not something that is aimed at the intended audience of Steven Universe.
If you've not heard of, or read, it then this link will take you to a copy of the story which you can read. Just a warning, it can get creepy.
