This was just one of the original drafts, where everyone had lightsabers. Lucas scrapped the idea and made it so only Jedi used them, and gave everyone else laser guns.
This makes me question though, if they can make synthetic lightsaber crystals, why DON'T they arm their soldiers with lightsabers? they've already shown they can't hit for **** with guns, why not arm them with something that puts them on the same level as a Jedi?
That stormtrooper in TFA showed that with the right training, a storm trooper could kick some serious ass with a melee weapon.
It's because it's a highly dangerous weapon that could potentially murder you or at least take off a limb.
The basic logic behind it is that only someone that is Force sensitive could properly use one without seriously hurting themselves.... which was kinda thrown out the door in 7.
Yeah but so is a laser gun.
I'm just saying now that we've seen that non-force users can use one, they could easily teach stormtroopers how to use them, even despite them not being in tune with the force.
Sure, they wouldn't be as effective as a Jedi using one, but thousands of stormtroopers armed with lightsabers would be more than enough to take down a resistance.
You're telling me that the first order isn't capable of getting the materials needed for that?
(actual spoiler) They built a weapon that harnesses the power of a ******* SUN to destroy entire planets in mass, and they can't afford to arm stormtroopers with lightsabers?
The First Order had The Knights of Ren.
The First Order Stromtroopers had good aim.
Lightsabers are still expensive and the Loyaltrooper of Sick Spins won without the need of one.
Before TFA, lightsabers were banned in the Empire because the Sith didn't want anyone to get in the way. Only a few loyal to the Empire were allowed to fight with one.
