I ******* laughed out loud.

The writing for this movie was pathetic.

It felt like it was only catered to children.
But knowing FJ and its autistic community it probably fit their stature.

Did it bother anyone else that the only death JJ could make me actually care about was a character that someone else had already made me love?

I just feel like JJ couldn't build up a character enough for me to care about his/her death and had to use one of the characters from the original trilogy to deliver the punch.
User avatar #105 to #100 - daniboyi (01/10/2016) [-]
They had one movie, while the original triology had three.
I mean, do you really think they can accomplish the same in one movie as the other could in three movies?
Plus what did you expect? for them to kill off one of the main protagonists in the first movie?
Solo is the Obi Wan Kenobi of this movie. Shows up, says wise stuff, teaches stuff and gets killed off so our main characters can get a lot more focus in the next movie.
#116 to #105 - dyelfagget (01/11/2016) [-]
Yeah but I cared about Obi Wan and he was introduced in the same movie that he dies in. Han was a cheap gut shot by killing off a character that JJ really didn't do anything to make me care about. I wouldn't have given a **** about any of the new characters dying because JJ didn't manage to build them up like Obi Wan or even Han.

Yeah I agree, Han was spoiled until the end of time. The only thing that shocked me was when I saw the spoiled gif instead of text.

But Chewbacca's reaction for some reason turned my entire opinion around and made me care for him. I always found him to be the big dumb ******* ape of the originals.
User avatar #29 to #18 - ohemgeezus (01/10/2016) [-]
Yeah I knew what was going to happen going into it so when Han started walking towards him I was like, "oh here we go", but when it happened and Chewie screamed out in rage at his best and closest friend of so many years dying right in front of him I got a little bit chocked up. Personally I'm glad I had it spoiled for me before I saw it because it made so many things better like Han and Chewie walking into the Falcon for the first time in so long, Han saying bye to Leia, all that sort of stuff
User avatar #34 to #2 - duvallwhitey (01/10/2016) [-]

I was really disappointed they didn't do anything with Chewie when he got to base, like he just walks off and past Leia into the crowd of people cheering. It only looks like Leia and Rey were the only ones upset over it. Also, I'm upset they didn't do anything funny between Han and 3PO like in the originals Han would always mess around with 3PO, but the only bit they had together was then Han and Leia saw each other and he came up talking. I think they could've done it better

As someone that doesn't follow Star Wars at all, and hasn't even seen the new movie, can someone explain to me why Kylo Ren killed Hans?
Isn't that his father?

watch the movies.
User avatar #27 to #5 - ohemgeezus (01/10/2016) [-]
Basically his boss thought he wasn't fully fledged to the dark side so Ren said he would prove his loyalty to him, and then that happened
#14 to #5 - greyblade (01/10/2016) [-]
as far as I could tell:

Kylo is Han's son, who fell to the dark side, but who is still kinda torn between the dark side and the light side. he thinks that by killing Han, he'll finally be able to get over the pull to the light side. gonna have to see how that goes down.
User avatar #6 to #5 - toastiewaffles [OP](01/09/2016) [-]
He believed killing his father would further his power and show his devotion to the dark side. Or some **** like that
#61 to #6 - anon (01/10/2016) [-]
I would say that it was more to destroy the last thing that he still had love for. There's this DC character called Harm that in order to claim a legendary sword he killed his sister, the only person he ever cared for, to make his heart pure. Legend goes only the pure of heart can wield the sword but it never says you have to be pure good, just pure, so he destroyed the only thing good in his life. Kylo's struggling with the light and in order to finish off the last bit of goodness in him he has to kill his father. That was my take on it anyway, basically what you said but a bit different.
User avatar #7 to #6 - DrollHumor (01/09/2016) [-]
So... it was like Anakin killing a bunch of kids?

Was their father-son relationship ****** or something?
User avatar #8 to #7 - toastiewaffles [OP](01/09/2016) [-]
Basically Kylo-Ren was being tutored by Luke but he decided to join the dark side causing Luke to disappear. There's no evidence of a ****** relationship, Han does his best to show he loves his son and invites him in for a hug, which is when he is killed.

Basically, yeah it was like Anakin killing the kids. His only reasoning for it is that he's a bad guy trying to be the baddest bad guy like Vader
User avatar #9 to #8 - DrollHumor (01/09/2016) [-]
Leia for a mom, Hans for a dad and Luke for a tutor and somehow they all ****** up in raising this kid?
Like, hell, you'd think he'd see Vader like modern Germans see Hitler. How do you **** up that bad and make him worship his grandpa?
User avatar #12 to #9 - greyhoundfd (01/10/2016) [-]
The Dark Side is by definition powerful. This power often seduces those who feel weak or unable to prevent certain tragedies, and a desire to be someone more powerful makes this even stronger. Kylo Ren is nothing more than an angsty teenager, who saw the power of the Dark Side which he believed would help him, and he sought out a more powerful tutor.
User avatar #11 to #9 - orkamungus ONLINE (01/10/2016) [-]
As far as I have heard the First order put out a lot of propaganda surrounding prominent figures of the Galactic Empire, including Vader. Plus, given that Kylo was drawn to the Dark Side of the Force and that Vader, his own grandfather, was one of the most prominent Dark Side users, probably furthered his admiration. Maybe they will explain more about why Kylo turned to the Dark Side in the next movie. And from what I gathered Kylro killed Han in order to sever his bonds with his family, one of the last things stopping him from fully embracing the Dark Side, because he still had feelings for them.

My personal theory is that Han turned on the lightsaber himself as its kind of done offscreen. He did say that he would do "anything" to help his son and the final words ben said to Han were "thank you" as if Han had given him permission or facilitated his own death in some way. Once Han realized that there was no walking away from this encounter, he did this to prevent ben from killing his own father in hopes that he could save ben from giving into the dark side completely. This could kind of parallel lukes scene with the emperor, where he choses not to kill him or give in to his anger and the dark side.
User avatar #28 to #23 - ohemgeezus (01/10/2016) [-]
It's a good theory, but I don't think it's the case, I think he knew walking up to him how it was going down so when he said, "anything" I think that was basically telling Ben to do it
User avatar #25 to #23 - stealingbikes (01/10/2016) [-]

User avatar #48 to #23 - novus (01/10/2016) [-]
I thought this at first, but it doesn't hold up under scrutiny. The best outcome for Han and Leia would be Kylo realizing at the last second that he doesn't want to kill his father and thus reject the dark side.

With your scenario, by Han committing suicide on Kylo's lightsaber he would be stealing Kylo's chance of redemption by removing his choice in the matter. He would actually be forcing his son down the dark path because Kylo never made a redeeming choice, and would still seek a way to cement his commitment to the dark side. Under some circumstance Han might choose death to save his son, but this method would not accomplish that.
User avatar #57 to #48 - kanjzo (01/10/2016) [-]
I wouldn't say that Han stole Kylo's chance of redemption, I would say that it sealed him from it, because Kylo didn't kill Han, (if johmi's theory is correct) it was Han himself, and didn't give that push to Kylo to go over the edge and fully commit to the dark side.
User avatar #104 to #57 - novus (01/10/2016) [-]
Yeah, but that implies Han knew that part of Kylo's dark side requirement was to kill his father, and I'm pretty sure that was never communicated. Why would Han assume Kylo needs to kill him? It was different with Luke and Vader because Luke would have been succeeding Vader as Palpatine's right hand man. Han is just some guy... It makes sense from Kylo's perspective why he would need to kill Han, but I don't think Han would see it.

Also kylo is a whiny 30year old brat that will probably be the savior of the galaxy, Han probably just died cause Harrison Ford wanted him to die since Empire, and Rey got her Mary Sue powers by reading Kylo's mind while she was force reading her "Their minds linked, a 2 way street, knowledge goes BOTH WAYS"

I've actually begun to form a theory about this. The Force is neither inherently good nor evil. The dark side can be used for good, and the light side can be used for evil. Evil just tends to utilize the dark, while good utilizes the light. But what happens when an enemy so great comes that neither the light nor the dark can defeat it on their own. In this case, I'm going to say that enemy is Snoke and the First Order (Especially now that there is no second Republic anymore.)

Ben's not evil. He knows this. Anyone can see he's just playing the part. People have criticized this in the movies, but I think its there for a reason. Think about the final exchange between him and Han before killing him. The lines in and of themselves just seem like disjointed, random, emotional lines if we're to believe Kylo is evil (Which I'll admit may be the case since he could've also just been stalling for Starkiller Base to charge.) But the one part that sticks with me was when Ben asks for help and Han says that he'd do anything for him......that would include dying, wouldn't it?

Ren knows Snoke is evil, and he doesn't want to work with Snoke, but he knows that on its own, the light side of the Force will not be enough to beat Snoke. (I mean, technically, it took a teaming up of the light and the dark to defeat Sidious), and Snoke seems more powerful. So Ben needs to be evil. He needs to develop the dark side within himself, so that he can work with the light side (Rey), in order to defeat Snoke.
