For as much crap as pod racing gets, I think it's one of the most redeeming parts of that movie. The sound design for all the pods was absolutely amazing and still is. The shot towards the end of the laps with the all the pods (literally car seats wired to straight up jet engines, which is awesome by itself) barreling through the desert for the weekend amusement of some random outer rim civilians takes you away from the overall plot and lets you imagine the world they live in, which adds so much more immersion to the story.
