Here's my take on regret.

You're a constantly changing person, getting better than what you were before. You learn new things, new abilities, new ideas. You learn that the way you acted before was shameful compared to what you could have done, and that is what regret is. It's shame mixed with time.

However, you're a different person. If you could go back and do things your way, how would you do them? If you would do them in a way that is not shameful, then you should not regret. Regret is related to your present self. Why should your present self ever feel bad for something it wouldn't do?

If you would still do the same thing however, and would feel bad about it, that is shame. Shame is okay to feel, it drives you to improve your current self. Turn that shame into regret. Then let your regret go.
