I assume it means her dad used to be nice, but dealing with the war and taking care of the company made him cold and angry, so she's crying because she misses how her family used to be.

I would reccomend it personally. The fight animation is consistently great, and beyond that, the out of combat animations improve significantly in season 2, as does writing, voice acting (This because most of the cast were not professional V.A.s) , etc. As for comparison, it is hard to say, as it is kind of its thing, a mix of anime and western cartoons. Now, there have been shows of that mix before, like Avatar, but RWBY leans more to the anime side.
Since it is still only hours in length, I would recommend watching up to the end of season 2 before making a decision.

I think it is great. Well it got a lot it has to work on too if you look at it in the first few episodes the animations seem just kinda ..... off. But it gets alot better except for walking animations they still dont look so nice . Also I generally think that it is quite fun and that the characters are well made
