All of these are jokes that reference RWBY, an anime type show by Rooster Teeth, except for xray and vav, which is another thing by Rooster Teeth on youtube. I don't personally watch the show but I've heard that it's good. I assume to get the jokes completely you have to have watched the show. But just think of ruby as a badass magical girl just starting out on her journey as anime protagonist. And what do anime protagonists have? Dead moms! It's, like, a rule or something.

i think what i said was a little confusing, Ruby's mother is dead (or presumed to be), and Yang was looking for hers. Now, Raven could be Ruby's mother, but i think she is Yang's (and for all we know, Yang could have gotten her blonde hair from their father)
