I heard his work/lifestyle practices might have contributed to his ill health, but Jesus, he looks half dead already in that picture.

Not really surprising considering his co-workers said stuff like "He'd regularly do nothing but animate for 20 hours solid, then pass out underneath his desk" and suchlike.

Probably a remnant of his Asian heritage. Gods know those japanese animators/artists are completely ******* nuts.
To the point where "X manga is on Hiatus" is basically code for "the main artist collapsed in his studio and is currently recovering in hospital"

Yes he worked very hard, but that was because he was passionate about what he did.

He did not have ill health, but died of an allergic reaction.

Actually, one of the pillar of the success (or at least, of what makes this show the way I like it) is the variety of (toony) facial expressions on the characters.
