I'm also pretty sure Mercury wasn't in on it.
Another thing I've been thinking about: Which girls are gonna be the four guardians? Pyrrha looks like she's gonna be fall, and that's where I run into problems: Ruby is obviously gonna be either spring or summer, however, I think Yang fits summer great, and Weiss fits winter perfectly, so where does Blake fit in...?

It was said that the power transfers to the person the maiden thinks of last. This could mean Ruby and Weiss are going to be the Summer (Ruby's Mother) and Winter (Weiss' sister) maidens. Of course, this assumes the names are actually references, which isn't the case for the fall maiden, so it's just an idea. It would also mean that Winter has to die at some point which is unlikely, both because she is skilled and a high ranking officer and because I doubt the show will get that dark.
Side question: Aren't maidens supposed to be virgins? This would scrap the above idea and lead to some relationship problems later on.

And Yang's mother is also maiden, think about how powerful she is when we saw her, and would explain why she suddenly dissappeared. So i am already make the prediction on this, Yang is going to spring, Ruby is Summer (her mother), Weiss is Winter, and Blake is going to be Fall
