Rooster Teeth only know how to manipulate 3d models and they wanted an anime approach...

yeah it looks pretty ****

2d animation is way more expensive than 3d, at least in these cases
i can see WHY they chose 3d, but **** ME if they could be bothered to put some more time and money into it
User avatar #52 to #43 - deaminzaints (10/23/2015) [-]
money is one thing, but time? with the amount of animators they got, making it 2d or just making the 3d better would still be taking weeks, maybe months pr episode. id rather have somewhat poorer animation and get a third season now than get better quality but having to wait for 2018...
#59 to #43 - anythingoes (10/23/2015) [-]
>>#23,

This is Monty Oum's baby, and his style has always been 3D animation. That, and cat fights.

I mean, there are plenty of flaws they encounter from using 3d and not being highly trained professionals, but it also has the best fight scenes I have ever seen in a cartoon/anime (I've been bitched at for calling it either of those). I'm not saying there aren't better fight scenes in different shows, but I can not recall any. The voice acting is good at times, but not consistent and they are more likely to hire people they know, than voice acting professionals. The story is interesting, but nothing to write home about.

Anime was inspired by disney, all these weabs can cry all they want, they are just cartoons.

While I do agree that the fight scenes are great, Im surprised to hear you dont know of any others. Do you watch any action movies?

Two days later, shoot me, long weekend. Anyways, I'm talking about cartoon/anime fight scenes. I have not seen all the animes, I have not seen a lot of animes, but of all animes AND cartoons I have scene, RWBY has the best action/fight sequences.
#70 to #69 - CommonJoo (10/26/2015) [-]
I think that's because most anime don't focus on choreography like RWBY does but instead go for high speed flashy moves.

Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works 2014 has a bunch of epic fight scenes imo. Check it out

Normally I try and find my own animes, but recently I tried new things and have loved it. I am 10 episodes into *deep breath* Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso and I love it (though I think I know how it will end, or at least some of the ultimate conflicts and I am not looking forward to it). I found that I can really enjoy no action/fighting based animes because it's a nice break for there to not be an antagonist. It allows for a lot more character development when a person has legitimate struggles with themselves instead of the obvious bad guy with freaky hair and next-to god tier powers that are used for evil.

Anyways, I like Naruto/Shippuden and it does the same thing you described. I am getting really sick of the flashy attacks because they get repetitive. In Naruto Shippudens' opening sequence they often have actual real time fight sequences and they look way better than the 20 episode fight arcs that make up most of the show.

tldr; I like RWBY cause it's action sequences are real time instead of a three minute fight that last four episodes (Again, my only good example, Shippuden had that).
User avatar #8 to #1 - superiorcheerio (10/23/2015) [-]
Yeah, the art and animation could be better, but the show itself is pretty good.

well i like it
User avatar #5 to #1 - gentlemantoast (10/23/2015) [-]
I just looked it up and it's also really cliche and overly edgy within the first 6-7 minutes, the 3D stuff just makes it worse
User avatar #42 to #5 - warioteam (10/23/2015) [-]
the little 2d that i did see from the first couple episodes was supposed to be a news broadcast or something, and it was even worse than the 3d

The show itself is pretty overrated
User avatar #36 to #20 - Stamyham ONLINE (10/23/2015) [-]
It has really good music though. Never watched more than 5 minutes of the show, but some of the music from it occasionally comes on my pandora station and is generally very good.

3d models with not-quite cellshading.
Sorta weird, but it works in some scenes.
Show is OK so far:
Fight choreo is superb.
Animation outside of fighting hurts sometimes.
Music is neat.
Story and characters are mostly chilché driven so far,but it's foreshadowing a more in-depth subplot.
Bonus points for ******* awesome weapon hybrid thingies examples include a sniper scythe, a staff/dual gun-chuck thing and a thermos that is apparently a flame thrower/bat thing
I quite like it
#60 to #45 - anythingoes (10/23/2015) [-]
This pretty much sums how I feel.

Just one thing lacking.

A bit of bitternes on the feeling that the show could be better with a bit more of polish. A bit more care on animating, better VAs
User avatar #62 to #60 - pickaxe (10/23/2015) [-]
Yeah,it could do with a tad bit more polish in non-combat scenes, even just a little,to get rid of obvious mistakes, like sliding or floating people....
It really breaks immersion sometimes.

"How dare you critique something because you don't have the ability to do better!"

That's an incredibly ignorant mentality. I'm allowed to do that, you see. Whether I hurt your dainty little feelings on something you didn't create or not. That said... I am actually a 3D artist, learning the finer points in college. And I can tell you right now: It's an incredibly low quality work:

-The models are very low poly by today's standards. It looks like it was rendered on something DEFINITELY not made for that. And yeah. I get it. It's anime. It doesn't need a lot to convey its' forms. But I would love it if I didn't have to look at something "professional" and be able to see flat edges on organic shapes. Color me anal, but this isn't a video game. It doesn't need to be concerned with "how hard it is to run it."

-The lighting, or lack thereof, does very little to add actual depth to what's going on. There's a basic toon shader added to it that lets us know it's 3 dimensional, but that's it. There is no attempt to blend color and simulate actual light.

-The clipping could have been handled much better. Seriously. Blender's a free program and it has all KINDS of ways to handle collision detection. RWBY is not pre-rendered. It is a final video. Have some pride in your work, and catch those flowing fabrics going through torsos. Those hairs whipping through faces. Those weapons making impossible rotations through their wielder's ******* arms.

It looks like it was made in Miku Miku Dance and rendered on a toaster.

oooor there are human limits to what a small company can do within certain time limits on a restrictive budget and thus they cannot produce a result akin to the multi-billion corporations that they are competing with and whom you ultimately compare them to?

I like RWBY and all, but seeing it on FJ makes me cringe for some reason. I'm pretty sure it's the fact that I know what I'm going to get when I scroll down to the comments: either people overhyping it or people bashing.

It was popular, thus the ones who hadn't watched it hated the people that did, and by extension the show itself. It's just a classic fandom V hater phenomenon, i'm surprised you haven't learned to just ignore it by now.

I understand your feelings completely. I had the same thing with SAO. I have come to terms with SAO being a subpar story, and possibly a fountain of **** for the rest of the anime industry, but that doesn't mean I like it any less. Not that I'm accusing you of liking RWBY less because FJ

I mean this in the nicest way possible: RWBY is cringe-worthy for a significant portion of its runtime. Those times are what you are going to see criticized again and again. Since the story only gets stronger as it goes, you will always get the criticism from the earlier parts with the highest density of cringe.

I hate how they animated everything out of combat. The combat looks neat and flows nicely, but whenever they're just going about day to day life they feel really robotic and ****** .
User avatar #9 to #7 - superiorcheerio (10/23/2015) [-]
I'm not sure but I think they use motion capture suits for more mundane stuff, but manually animate anything complex. This means that the regular motion is fairly robust and doesn't quite fit into the environment exactly, while fight scenes and the likes can be perfected frame by frame.
#13 to #9 - amuzen ONLINE (10/23/2015) [-]
maybe, it doesn't feel like mo-cap to me though, their movements feel really unnatural. It reminds me more of how they animate cheap cartoons.
Personally I think they just get a bit more lazy when dealing with the day to day stuff.
User avatar #18 to #13 - superiorcheerio (10/23/2015) [-]
Perhaps, but I still think it might be motion capture, due to the lack of motion blur and the high framerate. As I said, though, I'm not really sure at all about any of this.
User avatar #22 to #18 - mariox (10/23/2015) [-]
You are correct. If my memory serves right, they mentioned in one of the RWBY diaries that they mocap practically everything about the characters except for the action scenes, something about there being only so many ways to do punch or kick but their being uniqueness in mundane things such as a walk or a gesture.
#21 - priestoftheoldones (10/23/2015) [-]
I've always tried to watch RWBY, because it's not bad. I've just found it so cringey. Not in the Welcome to The NHK kinda cringey where it's on purpose And extremely painful yet enjoyable to watch or anything. I don't know, man.
User avatar #56 to #21 - blockanator ONLINE (10/23/2015) [-]
Agreed, I tried watching the first season and had to stop at the 3rd one. I just couldn't watch it for some reason. I think It might be that fact that the 3D CGI hurts my eyes after a while.
#61 to #21 - anythingoes (10/23/2015) [-]
Probably because of the shonen feel it got.

I hate that, but I do love the fight scenes and the soundtrack, so I bear with it.

For me it's really the premise that draws me in. A lot of the characters are okay at best admittedly they did a rather good job at making one such as myself see a little of myself in Jaune . I really like the idea of an almost universal soul-essence type thing people can have and I must say the weapon tech they use, though extremely impractical, does look really cool.

Huh. I didn't know RWBY had so much hate. Until now all I've heard are people who love the show. I guess with volume 3 coming out, there's going to be a wave of new reaction pics and people thumbing it down simply because it's RWBY...so MLP the second coming.

The 4th, actually. Teen Titans GO! and Steven Universe were the 2nd and 3rd coming.

Also, it's been like Marmite from the start - you either love it, because of Roosterteeth or you hate it, because it's got pretty **** production value and everyone's a walking cliche.
