Tbh, the story is worse than the visuals.
I was really excited when I saw the trailers, and even after watching more, I can say that the best part about RWBY is the fight scenes.
But that's literally all it has going for it. The story is like something from a DeviantArtRP, the visuals are meh, and the comedy and dialogue is something that belongs on Cringechannel.
If by the look you mean the animation style, I know a guy who felt the same why. He likes the show now, but it tool him a few tries.
Personally, I feel the story gets better, and the crew themselves have stated that they always intended for the first three seasons to be an intro to the overarching plot. That said, the show up to this point can be knocked out in about half of the afternoon, as the early episodes are usually under 10 minutes with this season approaching 20 minutes.
I would recommend just sitting down and watching as much as you ca then stopping and coming back later. See if you can make it to the current episode and decide then.
Also, as it has been said before the fights are beautiful, and the animation improves outside of fights as well; for example, background characters are no longer silhouettes in season 2.
Idk what you are talking about. I started watching it because of how unique the art style was.
Also this animation style makes for AMAZING fight scenes later on.
Best show for action for me. It is extremely stylized, amazing weapons Snipe scythe, rocket hammer, nunchucks flintlocks and mother ******* shotgun fists , great music as well. But thats where the good points end, filler is meh, animation out of combat is either bad or meh, chars are getting better but for the most part aren't there yet. If you don't like the combat scene's don't continue watching.
The main appeal of the show is how its very similar to a Japanese style high school based anime, except its over the top in a less cartoonish way.
The worst parts are where characters are running, but the scenes were characters are interacting close up are done with motion capture to help get expression's correct.
The show's very high energy for the most part and the music's rather well done.
What exactly do you mean "the look of it"? I'll give you that the slice-of-life animations are a little stiff, at least in the first season (haven't gotten around to the second or third yet, whoops), but the combat scenes are top tier. If you like over-the-top action scenes with crazy as **** weapons and moves like I do, at least.
It's like this. If you have ever read a bad manga, or watched a bad show and you just do it because you are bored, or interested. You force trough about half of the series, it becomes habbit and you get used to it.
Deep inside you know its not worth it, it has mistakes, and it might even be bad. But it has become habbit. RWBY is kinda like that. The series is bad. REAL BAD. Every time I tell it to ppl, they rage, downvote etc etc because they either can't see the fact or they are just focused on different things on the show. But just because I know it's "bad", doesnt mean I can't enjoy it. It just has become habbit and I enjoye how semi average it is. But I would never recommend it to others, just because I enjoye it in a weird way.

"OMG FAGT UR OPINION ISN'T FACT >:ccc"
"LET PEOPLE ENJOY THINGS GOSH!"
***** you need to calm the **** down. ogthegreat is right, mini-OP did state it as though it were bad in all aspects, meanwhile the animation, sound design, fighting sequences, music, and most important of all - no room for argument there - STORY.
I can see why people think it's bad, hell even I think it is bad in some aspects. It is no One Punch Man but still good in other ways.
We greats have to stick together. And I like how zionsype had time to thumb down your comment but has yet to respond to >>#121. Is there problem zion? I'm feeling neglected and I don't appreciate that.
Uh, no, I'm not denying anyone's right to a different opinion. And if you have the time to make such an accusation, I don't see why you don't have time to respond to my comment.
1) I don't. I just took you for a more rational person. Or are you the type that only thumbs down just because you don't agree with someone?
2) Exactly what is stupid about it? Anon claimed RWBY is a bad series as if that were fact when that's subjective. That's all I pointed out. And the spoiler was just a joke.
To start off, I think its the "3D anime feel" that's might be throwing you off of the show, some people just don't like 3D anime, its ok. The style and appeal are very anime-like, while the story takes a more western approach. The story does get darker despite its visuals and it becomes a lot more action oriented in the latest volume(season). Volume 1 is slow and puts the basis of the show out for you to easily see it, and Volume 2 starts to pick up a lot faster while improving a lot of the show. Volume 3 is pretty good so far, with the darkest themes so far as well as some character growth(picking up from the previous volume that had some character growth too).
"the story takes a more western approach"
No, the story is like something from a weaboo's fanfic and terribly cringey.
I love RvB, and I loved the animation during the fights. RWBY is just...terrible in every aspect EXCEPT the fight scenes.
The animation has improved significantly but if the style of it (3D animation, computer generated, the like) isn't your thing, it will probably be difficult to be drawn in. If you are able to look past the cheesiness of the early episodes the writing gets steadily better and much darker as things go on.
Honestly, people like it for the same reason people like hellsing
The bad writing, acting, animation, plot design, character developement etc. all make it really easy to focus on the fight scenes.
and there are some really cool fight scenes if you can ignore the ****** animation
Likeable characters, pretty great fight scenes, interesting world, good writing. In my opinion, there's nothing really bad about it, which pretty much highlights that it's up to the taste of each individual.
"You are literally no allowed to judge anything made ever"
People like you are the worst. RWBY is terrible from an objective point of view, your opinion of a bad thing being good doesn't make it good.
Does it mean you're not allowed to like the bad thing? No, but it does mean you've got to accept the fact that it's bad, because that's just it, it's a fact.
- Any and all romance must be a troubled one. Remember, men are denser than osmium and if a woman makes a non-stupid decision, she will instantly catch fire. Or at least pretend that's how it works. Why? Because drama.
- Do two characters get along great and really like eachother? Tear them ******* apart. It's OK, everyone knows childhood friends never talk to eachother and always assume the worst when the other one does something. Add some dick or pussy to the mix, if you can. Everyone knows people instantly forsake decades of friendship if it means getting laid. Why? Because drama.
- People like a character? Shoot it in the ******* head. NO, wait, actually, that'd be stupid. Shoot it in the kneecaps, then beat it to death with a stick, while it's desperately trying to crawl away and begging for mercy. That's how you're supposed to treat beloved characters - like **** . Why? Because drama.
- Could the current very dramatic issue be resolved by two people talking to eachother for 5 minutes? Good, then make the two characters do literally everything except that. Why? Because drama.
- If everything is going smoothly and perfectly, ask yourself "What would be the worst possible thing that could happen in this situation?" and then go with it. Why? Because drama.
- If everything is going horribly and ************ , as yourself "What would be the worst possible thing that could happen in this situation?" and then go with it. Why? Because drama.
- Notice how every line ends the same? Because drama for the sake of drama is perfectly acceptable and should even be embraced. It's OK to pull random stuff out of your ass and **** on all the previous character development you've made, because drama is the justification of drama. You don't need any other excuse or reason. As a writer, drama should be your highest goal and aspiration.
Now, tell me. How many of these things have at one point or another happened in RWBY? Because I've watched a total of 8 minutes of it, but I assume it'd had a fair bit, since the cardinal rules of cheap drama apply to pretty much everything from Gravity Falls to Game of Thrones.
That's just kinda how writing is done
You can't really make NEW tropes in writing, because everything is a trope
a reverse trope is a trope
not doing a trope is a trope
mixing multiple tropes into one is a trope
All in all, every story is basically the same points just rearranged in a different way.
How you show these tropes off or get to the tropes is what makes the story interesting.
Movies that do something new or TV shows that do something new all have the same tropes we've seen before just rearranged in a new order or something along those lines
So yes, that's how drama is made in stories, good job you basically identified it.
But that's just how stories are made to create drama.
Of course it can be exacted better and more subtly but it's still always going to be there one way or another.
Then why is it always the one way? Why do writers so rarely go with the "or other" option? Why is the romance always troubled? There never seems to be a couple that just gets along well and has no massive, stupid problems. Same goes for the friendship. There is pretty much always something stupid as **** , which gets between two best friends and they suddenly forget they were best friends. The likable character is always up to their nipples in ******** . I'm not against using tropes. I'm against using THESE SPECIFIC tropes. Cause they've been done to death, yet people keep doing them, because they're easy as hell to pull off. That's why I call it cheap drama.
well first off I wanna say Im not defending rwby, I like rwby but admit its flaws
Im more defending writing as a medium here
And the answer is simple
We want conflict
Conflict is what drives an adventure story, and most stories, but adventures get off from it the most.
if two people had a perfect friendship think of how many TV shows would get boring eventually
even if its just for one episode to have the conflict, it shows that they're not perfect people, or in fact not perfect friends meaning they will argue and bicker at times.
And arguments can get really big really fast by a few stray words that were said by a character without them thinking.
As for a likeable character always having the **** stick shoved at them, that's conflict. Giving them wave after wave of ******** to fight through is the same reason people PLAY dark souls or something like that. It's a visage of being able to fight and win against huge odds.
If you want stories where the main character loses, those exist, and you can get them, that's an anti trope, where the hero loses, where the regular trope is to win.
going back to RWBY, its a long story they said, since monty had the entire story plotted out and its going to last a while, so who knows. They could be doing easy and simple tropes now and get into the more complicated tropes later in the story.
and if they don't, then it's just a simple hero story.
And nothing is wrong with a hero story, its things like the classic super man, or classic spider man that we all love for classic hero stories.
And they're all fine and good in their own light.
If you expect rwby to be some new, breaking the mold story you might be disappointed, but if something happens in the future to make it like that, you'll be happy.
I expect it to just be another hero story, and if it takes a turn for complex I'll be presently surprised.
But at the moment it's just a simple hero story, with simple tropes that show up in simple hero stories. A story doesn't have to break the mold and do new things to be a good story per say, but it's nice when they do.
IT's more so I wanted to try to talk about why I think the story isn't BAD per say, but didn't want people to think Im defending rwby just cause I like it
This is my honest opinion on the story, which would stay the same if I liked the show or not.
Kinda like how I'd talk about anime stories or something whether I like the anime in question or not, I'd still like to try my hand at talking about the story from a different standpoint then just a fan.
I'd just like to point out, I'm not saying it's bad. I'm saying it's cliche as **** . Like I said, I've watched a total of 8 minutes of it, but even I can see the story revolves around the characters and not around the setting. So if the characters themselves are well-written and likable (which I assume they are, because of the number of waifufags), you don't need a good overarching story. And those guys are good at making characters. It's why Red Vs Blue became such a massive hit.
I'm just saying that everything I saw in this post is cliche as **** writing that's dramatic for the sake of being dramatic.
Please. They've always been **** . One of the oldest waifu wars in internet history has been going on for 20 years now and is between Rei and Asuka from Evangelion - characters who have the personalities of a depressed bowl of oatmeal and a PMSing wolverine.
I'm not saying they should use ALL the anti-tropes at the same time, I just wish they'd occasionally throw in at least one. No need to revolutionize a genre, just change SOMETHING. The way things are going, most recent works of fiction seem like a ******* checklist. Vary things up a little, damn it!
Well that's true
Media, movies, tv shows, games, as a whole have been coming to a stand still lately and I don't really know why.
Sure I would love to see more stories very up what they do a lot I agree with you there.
As a whole, stories could be improved a lot.
I was just talking about this one story, and why its not a bad "story" per say.
"well first off I wanna say Im not defending rwby"
You are very clearly doing exactly that.
"I like rwby but admit its flaws"
You very clearly deny all it's flaws
how though?
Im talking about the story because that's the topic of the conversation
Rwby's animation isn't that great, the characters have been done before, the world and concept might be interesting but wasn't executed as well as it could have been
RWBY has a lot of flaws
Im talking about the story and how it stands at the medium of story telling alone without rwby
And it's just as I said, so far, rwby has just been a basic hero story which we all love, with things like super heros, so why do we hate it now?
It has a story. So far it's a real slow start. Story is starting to get a bit intresting. Only biggest plus are the great soundtrack and fighting animations. Also, yeah, it's a pretty low budget show. I think it's pretty good.
I think the actuell Problem is that Pyrrha will literally rip Penny into single parts, at most when Emerald will use her ability on her... That might give the crowd (and world) an... really big shocker.
It´s absolutly not relevant if Penny even survives getting ripped into pieces, the Moment the crow sees this, doom will be on the horizon. The entire world would see an beloved Young Girl suddenly ripping and other Person apart, limp by limp. The People will flip out, run in Panic and maybe even trample each other to death.
The Grimm waited for such an tasty Invitation, and Cinder gonna serv it with as much firework as possible, so even the stupidst and inexpierenced Grim will run for it.
Why is exposing Pyrrha's semblance a big deal? Is the Polarity Semblance rare/a big deal? I know it's super strong, but so it Weiss and her runes/summoning, Rwby and her speed, etc.
It's the secret behind her skill, and it's the reason she's considered the top fighter in her age group. If people find out about it, they'll know why she seems untouchable in combat: she's literally untouchable in combat.
Worst case, people will actually accuse Beacon of cheating in the tournament by putting in somebody who can stop any weapon.
That's pretty chill for a worst case scenario. Pretty sure Penny will die, people will freak and Grimm will show up. Which is really sad. Look at how happy that robot is!
I can't really see them killing Penny off permanently, but I guess you never know. I figure Pyrrha would figure out something's up when she makes contact with Penny and realizes that she is entirely metal.
ya but you could say the same about pennys clothes or fake skin that she wouldn't be touching the metal i doubt her power would really be stopped by the boots and if it was there would be no reason her power would work on penny because clothes/skin
How excatly is it "cheating". I always assumed ppl got their powers from birth. Just because she has power that seems OP to others should't make her "cheater". It should make her look like MC to others.
And its not like magnetism stops magic or shiz like that.
It isn't cheating, but a lot of people aren't going to think that a girl who can stop any weapon shouldn't be put into a tournament where 90% of the people competing use metal weapons almost exclusively. Her skill as a warrior doesn't matter if people know she can stop them with a wave of her hand.
Considering it drains you if you use, and this world is not medievil but fantasy / magical world I would assume ppl are ok with a spell that controls metal.
If you take that route, Ruby would be most op since she is basically a flash, the show just makes her op only when plot armor needs it.
From what has been foreshadowed, it's more likely that penny will "just" be ripped to pieces/catapulted into oblivion.
I believe they may influence her in a similar way as they did with yang, and force her to use lethal attacks on pyrrha. Thus gaining distrust in the atlas army, and a possible shutdown order ffrom ironwood.
It's pretty good. But some animations are pretty stiff since it is a pretty low budget. Also the creator of the show died last year. He is the reason why the fighting looks awesome in the show.
it's a combination of scenes from the most recent episode of RWBY and art from someone on tumblr called Gaelfox [it's her reaction art] gaelfox.tumblr.com/
Can someone remind me why it's bad that Penny got matched against Pyrrha? I'm not very smart and I'm not sure if I understood it correctly (polarity vs metal)...
well since emerald is creating illusions to get the winner to attack the loser while they're defenseless and Pyrrha has at her whim the ability to completely crush penny with a gesture. pennys life could be in serious danger.
