After working retail for many years, I can say that this doesn't happen. Most likely there was a guarantee or warranty on the item. Most products have a manufacturer warranty of some sort, and typically it is the store's obligation to reimburse the purchaser, after which the manufacturer reimburses the store. If it was purchased with a credit card or a customer rewards card, as most purchases are, it will have an account connected to it, that can be accessed for proof of purchase. Businesses take all sorts of measures to make sure they can honor these agreements, as it is their legal obligation to do so. Chances are OP is just a ****** employee who doesn't know his store's protocol on situations like these..
