close, although the map doesnt really resemble the US that much, and if was any city, its more in a St.Louis area, silly Illinois people

actually, with the locations of the ponified city names. i think it can at least be a nod to america. my first assumption was st louis. but st louis is set in a location that is easily accessible to forests to the east, a river that runs through it, and farmland to the west. so i'd actually say ponyville is st louis. now consider the sky scrappers in chicago as the mountain, the centralized train location and transportation hub, and canada being added to the overall map of equestia. i wouldn't be surprised if we found a lake near canerlot that resembles lake michigan.
also, because i can't stop thinking about it when ever i watch either show. the WWE champion who's also from chicago, CM Punk, has a similar logo on his tshirt as twilight sparkle's cutie mark

I retract my previous statement and agree with you now. After enlarging the map and actually reading it(duh, should've done this right away), I see the resemblence, and anon's comment also gives some more clarity. As for the CM Punk logo, it is shockingly similar. (also, respect to you for not being a jerk, If I were you I would've been less nice to me)

actually, I believe that the gulf directly above the dragon arrow (looks like a horseshoe) is the Equestrian "Chesapeake Bay", not the Gulf of Mexico (it's too small and in the wrong shape to be)

Therefore, the arrow should originate from somewhere in the Virginias/Carolinas and be pointing not directly south but somewhere in the SouthEastern direction

That said, it could very well be pointing to somewhere on Brazil's northern shore or Africa right below the Sahara
