I just have one question OP..
If that is true then what does this have to do about the remaining part of the sentence?

"Legend has it that on the longest day of the thousandth year, the stars will aid in her escape, and she will bring about nighttime eternal." is the full quote, as mentioned by cutietooniexx.
Also, the moon was the prison which had four magic starts guarding it.
Nightmare Moon was the cell which the chosen star-ass would open and finally release Princess Luna.
And/or like I personally want to see it, Luna was just a host for this unknown evil which was to powerful to be cleansed when Celestia wielded the elements.
So she instead weakened it by sending it into exile and put those for stars as a timer for it's return.
