I've owned a phone on two occasions: my parents forced me to get one because I was walking home (for an hour or three) from school and my unit forced me to get one because nobody would come around the barracks to pass the word. I actually lied to my platoon sergeant about getting a phone, I gave him a fake number, so they nearly njp'd me for that...

wow... why are you so much against owning a phone anyway? It's always in handy to be able to keep in touch with people, and you never know when someone needs you. I'm not talking about fancy smartphone's who's battery won't last longer than a day, I'm talking about old nokia phones that need to be recharged every few days (up to a week if you don't use it for anything else, if I am correct) as opposed to every 24 hours (there's even a nokia phone that can last for a MONTH).

Because I don't want to be tethered to people all the time? I don't want to have to let my parents know I'm ignoring them when my phone rings, I don't want to have to talk to anyone that knows me at any time, and I don't want to have to pay an exorbitant monthly service charge for something I'll use once a month at best.

Fair enough, but you don't need to pay monthly, you can spend 5 euro over here for a sim card with a number, and people can always call you, no need for a monthly payment.

Tho I think you're overreacting regarding how much you'd be pestered with it... but then again, I don't know the guys you know.

Not having a phone means people interact with me either face to face or on my own terms.
Having a phone means less people speak to me face to face, I have something bulky I have to carry around with me all day, and anyone can call and make me get up from what I am doing at any time.
I do not want a phone. Unless it's for work, I'm never going to get one.

So long as you don't travel much and people can always find you with ease, then yeah, guess that you can do without one.

It's a hell lot better than having a phone and never ******* answering it, I know quite a bunch of people who do that.
