Every series has it's share of shitty episodes. Even great series like Doctor Who, Star Trek, old Pokemon episodes, The Simpsons, and Ed Edd n Eddy. Had a few stunningly bad and dull episodes.
Also if you just pick up in the middle of a series you're probably not going to be all that invested in the characters you would otherwise watch develop, and grow respect for.
TLDR: no it was just a shit episode

It was a pretty sub-par episode, not nearly as good as Hearth's Warming Eve, Owl's Well That Ends Well, or Return of Harmony. Episodes about those foals are always terrible, I understand.
