That's the sad truth about terraria. If a material is in a square block, it darkens. I try to make it bright so people can see the colors I use and stuff. It kind of ruins the picture, but at least you can see which character it is. Another thing, I used corrupted sand for her skin, so it makes the background all dark and spooky, like you see. In corruption, sunlight isn't as noticeable. There is definitely day, it's just the biome. Also, honestly, I don't think I could do one without torches. It'd look weird and dark. At a certain depth, all of the blocks turn black, like I said before, so you couldn't see the middle section anyways.
