Sweet Apple Ale

I'm not normally a big fan of fruity beer. In fact, I tend to avoid it. But as macrobrews go, I am a big fan of Shock Top, so when I saw their Apple Weißbier on the shelf at Vons, I had to give it a try.

Turns out to be pretty good. It actually has a really big, tart character about it that reminds me quite a bit of a Lambic (wild) ale, which is one of my favorite Belgian styles.

Lambic is a specific style of beer which is fermented with wild yeast and bacteria, rather than the carefully cultured single-strain yeast which are used in >99% of beer-making. It is essentially beer as it existed hundreds of years ago, before the science of microbiology was understood.

Lambics (and Gueuzes, which are derived from them) tend to vary wildly in taste and strength, and are inherently quite unpredictable. Some are amazingly awesome, some are downright undrinkable. In general, they tend to be extremely sour and acidic. It's an adventure in every barrel.

The word "Macrobrew" is kind of a joke. It's a play on the term "Microbrew," to describe those microbreweries which have "made it big time" in terms of commercial success. (Stone, Green Flash, ShockTop, New Belgium, Blue Moon, etc.) They are still a million times smaller than Budweiser, but are generally available nationwide.

I love shock top, I just don't like this flavor.

I can certainly understand that. It's radically different from most wheat-beers, very tart, almost like a cider.

Which is weird. I'm not a big cider fan myself, though I *adore* sour beers.

I ******* hate shock-top, except for the apple flavor. Orange is marginal
