I'm not completely sure myself. The show is kind of like Nyan cat - some think it's the best thing in the universe, others think it's retarded, but neither side knows why they feel that way. I personally like the fanmade stuff and the community more than the show itself. I used to go to the FJ pony thread, before I became a brony, just because I liked the crazyness.
