those were their disguises, they were so ashamed they made new personas to cover their legacy as blank flanks. it wasn't until they noticed applebloom at the party were they able to gain the courage to show their true identities. this also explains why we never saw them in class before hand.
or the animators just needed two unimportant bodies to fill the seats of an unimportant scenes so we could all be happy little fuckers and carry on
