I use it every time I see a lot of replies, so I have to carefully lie in wait while all images load just in case somebody already pointed it out. I imagine I might be one of the people keeping this practice alive because I seem to be able to do it quite a bit.

After reading Little Miss Rarity (never heard of her before reading some of the comments) I think that the reason people read it is because deep down, our feral instincts enjoy the blood and gore, and the "punishment" that they speak of.

TL;DR It's instinctual, I believe, the reason we like it.
