redneck - originally used as a term to describe people in the work force such as construction workers, welders, farmers, etc. it was later used to insult white people who live in the south and have a lack of education
southerner - A native or inhabitant of the south, especially the southern United States.
#7 to #4 - ponchovia (01/21/2013) [-]
the term redneck came from the sun burn that most people working in these fields would get on the back of their necks
#11 to #7 - sinery (01/21/2013) [-]
No, rednecks were those whom praised to sun the most.

oh mah gawd, you mean I'm not alone? Someone else understands that redneck isn't insulting?

Well, Greenhorn just used to be a term for someone who was new to something, Usually used by the more experienced at said activity. I guess that could have changed too. It wasn't supposed to be derogatory, but it was used as an insult on occasions when a newbie screwed up.
#13 to #12 - ponchovia (01/21/2013) [-]
still is, i think its one of the few terms that kept its original use while being used in other situation.

I never understand why people wave this flag. Could someone explain it to me?
They lost the war, so what meaning does the flag have anymore?
User avatar #181 to #179 - WHATTHEPISSTRAINE (01/22/2013) [-]
History, The same reason, Many welsh Refuse to speak English. I had ancestors on both sides of the war.

Not sure, but I think you have the word redneck confused with the derogatory term "hick." Redneck refers to someone who works all day, commonly outside, and usually they have a sunburnt neck or very tan neck. Rednecks can actually be quite intelligent and helpful, hicks on the other hand are all idiots.
User avatar #117 to #64 - drewsky (01/22/2013) [-]
The message still got across.

Then again the pony on the left has a job in one of the most prestigious cities in the country, and the pony on the right works on an apple farm and has trouble with basic math.

not really, liberalism and socialism are on the same side of the political spectrum. The same goes for conservatism and fascism.

THANK YOU.. I live in Tennessee and this gets really annoying. I go to a University, I love Science, and I want to eventually become a Professor for crying out loud.. An accent doesn't make you less intelligent, poor environment does.
User avatar #198 to #193 - reginleif (01/22/2013) [-]
And not to offend, but the accent can sometimes imply poor environment.

Think about it.
User avatar #202 to #198 - englman (01/22/2013) [-]
True. I actually try to speak 'correctly', though. However, I think an accent is almost inescapable because you're around it 24/7. I hear what you're saying though.

Ef yer gran'mammy be always a'talkin' like dis, den ya prolly ain't a'learnin' no "fancy englersh" nun to good lol.

Isolate yourself and watch a lot of British shows.
User avatar #210 to #209 - englman (01/22/2013) [-]
Lol I guess that could work, but then you'd sound British in the middle of the South?
User avatar #212 to #210 - satrenkotheone (01/22/2013) [-]
Actually it can work. Not that I've tried, but it does affect you in one way or another.

And I suppose that's somewhat a problem in a way, but how awesome wouldn't it be? You want to become a professor after all.
User avatar #215 to #212 - englman (01/22/2013) [-]
Lol that would be cool. I'd really love to teach my students to look past stereotypes and things of that nature (or at least show them that they are there). Even now, we're considering the British accent because it comes across as a sounding intelligent, when British people can be 'stupid' like anyone else lol.

All that junk aside though, British accents are pretty sweet :D

Sorry for the rambling lol
User avatar #216 to #215 - satrenkotheone (01/22/2013) [-]
I should correct myself and say "Typical English" accent instead of British, more accurate. Sorry for that inconvenience.

I am rather fond of the Welsh and Irish ones. Though the Scottish is awesome too.
The English however is really okay. But nowhere nearly as cool as the other.

It's okay, I like this one.... with that I mean conversing with you.
User avatar #219 to #216 - englman (01/22/2013) [-]
Oh lol no problem at all. Yeah, I like all of the above! I personally love Scandinavian and Russian accents. I find myself mimicking other accents all the time lol little quirk of mine I guess.

And I enjoy conversing with you as well friend! :D
User avatar #220 to #219 - satrenkotheone (01/22/2013) [-]
But we Scandinavians really don't have that much of a real accent... just a boring English pronunciation failure.

We should be friends!
User avatar #222 to #220 - englman (01/22/2013) [-]
That's almost all an accent is anyway:D either way I love it lol. Hey, I'll be back in about two hours or so (hopefully), I have a Psychology class to get to :P

I'll send you a friend request!

I'm a Spanish speaker as well, while I like to think I am proficient at it, the folks from Mexico know exactly where I'm from, and like to make jokes at my expense.

What you going to do huh?
User avatar #207 to #204 - englman (01/22/2013) [-]
