Ponies are small horses. They are not girly just because girls like them, geez. Their voices are lovely! Maybe except the elder ponies and Bon-Bon. She's a pegasus, heh. Anyways, rainbows are just a spectral of lights. Again, doesn't really have to be girly. Lauren Faust has stated that it's a family show, and it has points and referrences that are clearly directed at older audiences. .gif related, that's a "small and girly" pony pegasus snapping a bear's neck.

That's actually something I'v been wondering too...

yeah it's image is certainly feminine (pastel colored ponies), but other than that it wouldn't come off as an overtly girly show.
