The voice actor initially thought that she was meant to be speaking the part of a male character, and tried to put on a boyish voice. She was never meant to sound retarded. Anyway, I know of someone who speaks like she did, and that person is disabled. Are disabled people not alowed to be portrayed on TV anymore?

She was never. Only people who wished to see offense in her character design saw it. I doubt anyone's opinions on disabled people would ever have been changed by Derpy's appearance.

Her voice sounded exactly like the Rudolph voice in that Christmas movie, no one complained about that.

Context. Everything about Derpy in this episode portrayed her to be an obvious satire of the mentally handicapped.

Gotcha. Makes sense. Oh well. Personally, I didn't think that their portrayal of Derpy in the episode was offensive. I knew she was slightly off, but no more than anyone else. When I was watching it I saw nothing really wrong with it... Like I said before, the voice could have been a little better, but it was fine in my opinion.

I have to disagree with you. In my opinion she looked like someone mentally handicapped. Even her name sounds like a joking name of someone mentally handicapped.

To each his own. I'm not going to try to change your opinion. I have the type of personality that I don't really look for the worst in everything. I try to see everything with some innocence. That said, I haven't seen the episode or heard the voice in a while, so I might be lying to myself. Anyway, my point is that they probably shouldn't have bothered with the whole scene in general. It was too fan-service-y to me and they had a good "Find the Derpy in the episode" kind of minigame while watching. It doesn't really matter anymore. It's already dealt with.

She could totally be a non-offensive character consistent with every appearance in the first season. They just... fucked up.

I don't see her removal as a censorship of an offensive character, but as a deletion of a horrible, cringe-worthy scene.
