I would have been cool with Derpy if she didn't have an obvious retard voice. You can be clumsy and cross-eyed but making her talk the way she did was just a bad idea.
The voice actor initially thought that she was meant to be speaking the part of a male character, and tried to put on a boyish voice. She was never meant to sound retarded. Anyway, I know of someone who speaks like she did, and that person is disabled. Are disabled people not alowed to be portrayed on TV anymore?
Gotcha. Makes sense. Oh well. Personally, I didn't think that their portrayal of Derpy in the episode was offensive. I knew she was slightly off, but no more than anyone else. When I was watching it I saw nothing really wrong with it... Like I said before, the voice could have been a little better, but it was fine in my opinion.
To each his own. I'm not going to try to change your opinion. I have the type of personality that I don't really look for the worst in everything. I try to see everything with some innocence. That said, I haven't seen the episode or heard the voice in a while, so I might be lying to myself. Anyway, my point is that they probably shouldn't have bothered with the whole scene in general. It was too fan-service-y to me and they had a good "Find the Derpy in the episode" kind of minigame while watching. It doesn't really matter anymore. It's already dealt with.
I haven't seen the non-edited version in ages. I don't even remember what the voice sounded like.
Yeah, she was great as kind of a "Where's Waldo" type character, but giving her speaking parts was not their best plan. Or, if they really wanted to do that much fan service, they really should have taken a different voice altogether.
What would really be cool if they would have gotten a popular "Fanon" Derpy voice and used that, like someone from the fandom.
