They're not really comparing them, they're just highlighting that some of the characters are popular despite having little screen time.

He was saying that because they all have large fan bases, that:

MLP = Star Wars = TWD.
that's how demographics got thrown in.

I actually took his statement to mean that because they all have large, dedicated fandoms, that comparisons can be made between them, despite just how well made each franchise is compared to each other.

The walking dead and starwars are far more well made than MLP, I understand this, however I enjoy MLP more than either of those two things.

If he meant in regard to the size of their fanbases, then yes, he was correct.
