It's the case in the UK that a person who occupies a property and treats it as their own for 'a significant amount of time' without challenge from the owner would be recognised as the owner under adverse possession laws, and the act of squatting itself is only illegal in residential buildings.

Situations I've encountered with this policy:
-The owner is in the hospital or a nursing home. Owner or family returns to discover a squatter has been there for over a month.
-An elderly woman, who lives alone, discovers that a homeless person has set up a camp in their basement and has been living there for months.
-Homeless people set up camp inside a house under construction, on which construction was put on hold for several months due to weather.
-A squatter broke into a garden shed and lived there for over a month.

It makes sense, since clearly the owner isn't treating it as their own, if the other is able to live there for such a long duration.
