this is similar to what happens with a fridge.

if you take just the bacon out, then a full fridge turns into "what the **** is there to eat?"

Ugh, a bunch of ignorant self-entitled teenage children at it again, thinking they know a damn thing about the world.

Yes, it's true that we have the largest defense budget. However, it's also true that the Military produces some of the most innovative and evolutionary technologies the world has ever known. Our ability to finance such research has literally changed the world in a variety of different ways. The Internet, which we are obviously all using, was originally created by the U.S. military.

However, it is not just our ability to produce technological results, but results that keep the world in a stable position. This ideology that the world is just filled with happy people that want to just prance around is absolutely ridiculous. The truth is that countries/people have been waging wars that result in the slaughter of their enemy since the beginning of our time. Our military is the prime factor for our balance. If they weren't around, the other nations would have taken what they believe to be there's. We are a violent race of people.

The only true way of keeping peace, is through strength. Whether you like it or not, it's a truth we must all come to terms with.

P.S. I actually know one of the first members from one of the original black ops divisions. The man has been in over 100 different countries. Killed 1000's of people. Why you may ask? Because at the end of the day, it preserves the peace of us first world nations. But hell, it's easy to make childish judgments from behind your computer in your cozy little room.

You are so full of **** , I'm surprised you're able to sit up long enough to type this crap. You don't know anyone from "the original black ops division", it's ******* pathetic when people go online claiming to know somebody.

We do not need a military large enough to take on the whole world at one time, this stupid redneck "murica!" attitude is disgusting, and I can't wait for you all to pass out of history like every other sect of past ignorance.

Real peace will never be achieved through fear.

Well there's a basic principal in military might that the strongest nation will have to spend significantly more to remain the strongest nation. This is because to stay at the forefront you have to put in the R&D to invent the latest tech. Then China, Russia and everyone else keep their spending low swimming in your wake, copying the latest fighter jet or missile defense system. Most of cutting edge military tech around the world is either adapted or copied from America's advancements. 5th gen fighters, GPS, drones, satellite imaging, space planes. We spend a fortune developing these things and the rest of the world benefits from it without putting in as much capital.

The reason America's in the **** is how much money we're spending on war. Sure, putting everyone and their dog in prison takes a large chunk of money, but it PALES in comparison to the amount of money we're spending on killing people. People say, "Oh, tax the rich more", but even if Bill Gates and Oprah were taxed 100%, not a penny of that money would go to help the people who need it, but you know the military would get some shiny new canons.

As a very smart guy Raymond Teller said, we're using money we don't have to kill people we don't know for reasons we don't really understand.

I'd just like to point out a few things.

First; America is one of the largest countries in the world. Texas is bigger than England.

Second; It's almost an American tradition to kick ass and take oil names.

Third; Everything's bigger in America.

Now that I think about it with the amount of money we spend every year we are bound to have secret weapons......Probably got a couple of these bad boys hidden under nevada.

It's A-okay to cut the defense budget but god forbid we cut any other form of government spending. That's just capitalist and republican greed!
User avatar #63 to #49 - superunclesam (10/16/2012) [-]
How about we cut out 5-10 grand a year from all the major politicians paychecks and stop paying all the ones who are no longer working. See how much money we have left to play with after that. Hell, they're making a ******** of money each year, plus benefits while the average american lives day to day on minimum to 9 dollars an hour

I have such a love-hate relationship when it comes to being an American.

On one hand, half of the worlds population hates us and we end up being the butt of many jokes.

On the other hand, I'm ******* American. Why should I give a **** what other countries think?
#172 - Womens Study Major (10/16/2012) [+] (1 reply)
These cuts already happened, the ones that the candidates are debating over now have not yet taken place and are much larger. On a side note, no matter how much defense you'd be cutting (Half of the discretionary budget, which is a small portion considering the entire government spending budget) the only way we'd actually relatively make progress in cutting our debt is to cut social security or medicare/medicaid.
User avatar #181 to #172 - zzzebror (10/16/2012) [-]
Yeah, because cutting a small thing takes away a bigger chunk than cutting something really freaking big.

"Give me my money back, the $800 billion for the Iraq war, and children's television is on the house," -John Stewart on cutting PBS funding

Not completely related but I like the quote, and it felt related enough.

Truth be told as a soldier, I know that the military budget can be cut down considerably without really affected our combat capabilities. However like any government cut back they'll first target what will affect people first.

Such as instead of cutting down on research funds, they cut down medical.

On the civilian side, Instead of reducing bloated a politician pay, they'll cut funding to PBS.

They did raise E-1's paygrade if I am correct to 1491 a month recently, so I'm not complaining.

I thought Japan and Germany weren't aloud to have Armies or is that border patrol and coast guard?
#16 to #9 - therealoak (10/15/2012) [-]
Germany and Japan are technicaly free on this terms.
for germany i can say that we self limited our army to an amount of 150.000 man.
the german constitution says that it is prohibited for germany to ever start a war again.
One of the main reason why there are no german soldiers in iraq for example. Im not an expert but thats what i know
User avatar #165 - okimura (10/16/2012) [+] (2 replies)
Did you all know that America spends more on military than the next 26 countries combined, 25 of which are allies. 'Murica
User avatar #176 to #165 - konradkurze (10/16/2012) [-]
yeah usa's budget also includes all the countries it has troops in at some leve, like the occupation forces in germany and japan, and the missile sites in poland

its much easier to manipulate other countries if you have military power in them
