Japans Military is actually quite large. Basically for the past decade they have been getting ready for an all out war with China by increasing the size and capabilities of their military. For comparison the only military in Europe that is larger is France's oddly enough. Well their Army is relatively small they have an extremely impressive Navy. The US also gives Japan special favors by selling equipment to them that other countries can not buy. An example is that we are going to deliver 42 F-35's to them in the coming years. They are also developing their own advanced weapon systems including a fighter that is said to rival the European Typhoon and American F-35. This is all combined with the fact that they just released plans in May to completely rearm themselves in preparation for the conflict with China.
They have a military, but it's more like a National Guard in the US (doesn't act like an army), they mostly have the US and a few others protect them since they legally can't.
I don't know what "acting like an army" constitutes to you, but the Japanese have been producing their own tank and submarine designs the last 40 years. The new Type 10 MBT is one of the most advanced in the world, alongside the Korean K2 MBT, and their diesel-electric subs are some of the most advanced in the world, comparable to German and Norwegian models.
They have a fleet of advanced missile destroyers, a large force of modern Jets, and a total of 250 000 active personnel. This is double what Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland have put together. If this isn't an army, I don't know what is.
The 7th fleet alone is almost equal to the PLAN by itself (they only have an old Admiral Kuznetsov class aircraft carrier that they refitted). Japan will probably be safe
only like once or twice when i was trying to find an apartment, but other than that most japanese tend to think im mixed for some reason so they treat me fine, maybe its cause i speak or somthing idk. its not a big issue for whites as much as it is for koreans, chinese, filipinos and blacks
Well, the whiteys have been friends with Japan for a while now, WWII aside, while the other east Asian regions have been at each others' throats since forever. There's also a lot of Japanese/American couples here, so maybe they think you're the product of one such couple and are trying to get in touch with your heritage?
lol i have no clue, maybe cause i act japanese. being quiet and polite and stuff, not like most americans who come here. most tourist are loud and annoying. overall i love it here, living here has been the best experience of my life.
Nice, it's good to read that somebody's having fun. Maybe their tolerance/acceptance is because you're actually making an attempt to integrate into the culture and learn the language?
Yeah, I've got a few friends that were in my high school anime club, and they proudly called themselves otaku, and I was just thinking "A real otaku like myself knows that being an otaku is not something to be proud of!"
What do you mean they legally can't. Like does the UN say no and if they seem to be making a army does the un call in the big honchos to sort it out or what?
After the US won WWII, part of the peace treaty with Japan included them no longer having armed forces, legally, if they formed one now or anything resembling it (this includes allowing guns to citizens there), the US could say 'Ya done ****** up' and attack them for breaking the terms of they're treaty.
A standing military force of any kind is, theoretically, prohibited under Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution. That having been said, the Parliament of Japan, which the Japanese Constitution enshrines as the absolute authority on all Constitutional matters, established a standing "self-defense force" within 10 years of adopting the new Constitution.
The Treaties that govern Japan's ability to establish and maintain a military force did not end with the Japanese surrender at the end of WWII. In 1947, the aforementioned Constitution, written under the supervision of the occupying American force, was adopted by the Japanese government. In 1952, the Mutual Security Assistance Pact, which was drawn up and ratified with the input of the Allied forces, allowed Japan to establish a military self-defense force. The idea was that, while America would still be the big dog in defending Japan against outside aggression in return for Japan never again becoming a military power, Japan should and would be allowed to shoulder some of that burden by establishing and training a relatively small force that would work in conjunction with the American military in the event of an invasion by China or the Soviet Union. In 1957, Japan entered into an agreement with the United Nations whereby her military forces would be allowed to deploy abroad but only in circumstances where 1) Japan's national sovereignty and security were at risk and 2) Japan was working in conjunction with a UN recognized and sanctioned international coalition.
It is, perhaps, helpful to regard Japan's military not as a complete military force in and of itself, but instead as a kind of National Guard. While it's primary purpose is to defend the home islands of Japan against outside aggression, that force is permitted to act in support of a larger "federalized" military. It's just that in the case of Japan, that federal force isn't Japanese.
I always thought Japan had no "real" army since WWII, just a small defensive force, but Japan has like the 5th biggest army expenditure worldwide. That seems pretty high for a small defensive force. Its not even called an armed force, just "Japan Self-Defense Force"
The japanese have ramed up their military spending even further since China started becoming strong, in fact so have India. The whole of the asia pacific region is worried now that China stronk.
unless China happily cooperates I don't see Russia winning Japan that easy. Unless they use nuclear warheads like chiken, which naturally would cause US to fire theirs.
But purely Japs vs Russians, Russians would have it very very hard to even get there. One miserable avioship.
There's only that much desant you can throw in the lion's cage.
Most of Japan's population is 65 year olds, and Russia really has no restrictions when it comes to increasing their military strength (as to where Japan does).
If they were to fight now, it'd be a slaughter with absolutely no honor in it, but give each country prep time and an even amount of men and women (all in their 20's) and this could be a fantastic fight.
Both countries have determined soldiers (both of which proved their inability to fear death), and lust for greater weapons.
I would definitely bring a camera and record everything if this battle were to go down.
