You know what's really ******* terrifying?
In 1990 the Soviet Union was in possession of 27 000 nukes.
Today, and then, Russia was the only nuclear power after the dissolution.
They only have 16000 nukes...
Where the **** are the last 11 000 nukes? That's equivalent to the entire US nuclear arsenal!

They could have, you know... disarmed them?
#11 to #8 - gerfox (11/22/2013) [-]
They haven't. Some, far from all.
User avatar #17 to #4 - formidableguy (11/22/2013) [-]
They say they were disarmed, which is true to a certain extent. Others were sold to country's wanting to have nukes but the inability to manufacture them.

Really its a guessing game that I hope that no one plays cause I dont think Britain will survive it.
User avatar #27 to #4 - mistercookie (11/22/2013) [-]
Both the US and the Soviet Union had a lot more nukes then than they had today. When the cold war was over, both parties signed a treatise about disarming their nuclear bombs, which they did, and have continued to do, even though they still have a long way to go before the 4th world war won't be fought with sticks and stones.

Some need to be taken apart.
Some were disarmed.
Some were unusable because nukes degrade over years.
User avatar #57 to #4 - xtwinblade (11/23/2013) [-]
I might be wrong, but i think after the end of the cold war and the Tsar bomb happened, they disarmed most of the nukes because they knew they could destroy the world with just less than 2% of their biggest nukes.

Thank you all for your answer, I thought a lot more than 86 nukes were missing. While 86 is a too damn high number, it's at least not in the thousands as I feared. Never thought anybody would actually reply
#26 to #4 - xxgeneralxx **User deleted account** (11/22/2013) [-]
Russia never had 27000 nukes. that was all a lie to let the US have a blank check to buy as many nukes as it wanted.
#28 to #4 - somekindofname (11/22/2013) [-]
Most of the Uranium and plutonium warheads are being sold to the US for use in powerplants or are being used in russian powerplants. Russia is currently working hard on disarming most of their atomic weapons so theres little reason to fear anything... except the 86+ confirmed lost atomic weapons that no one has a clue on where are today.
User avatar #30 to #28 - biomedic (11/22/2013) [-]
Can you use 70% enriched uranium in power plants? I swear fuel uranium is only at like 5%
User avatar #32 to #30 - rapterjesus (11/23/2013) [-]
You can dilute the uranium.
User avatar #33 to #32 - biomedic (11/23/2013) [-]

#51 to #4 - anon (11/23/2013) [-]
most of those nukes where used in other things, what's really bad is that USA has 11 nukes they can't account for, no one knows who's taken them or what they have been used for.
User avatar #62 to #51 - enkmaster (11/23/2013) [-]
There are 2 off the coast of California (I think, might be Hawaii or something..) that were lost during either transportation or drills. They're just there, at the bottom of the ocean.
#81 to #4 - anon (11/23/2013) [-]
this happened.

the Nunn–Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction program. basically the U.S. want in and made sure none of the nukes got lost when the soviet union dissolved as well as disassembling thousands.
User avatar #54 to #4 - tacticalhog (11/23/2013) [-]
Pretty sure they either got sold or were disassembled. Hope this helps.

#89 to #65 - Elemental (11/23/2013) [-]
Gueule directly translates to snout or some other term for animal mouth if that's wrong. Most my teachers were Francophones. It's also just extremely rude.

I was talking direct translation. In meaning ya, it's Shut the **** up.

I fully understand you, more than anyone alive right now I'd bet and I can tell you you're not a very nice person when it comes to relationships, intimate or not. As soon as someone cares about you you just take them for granted and stop caring about them. I've been the one who's always tried as hard as I can to help you in every way that I can, but at the end of the day you'll ignore me and not really care. Other people who don't really care about you you'll crave the attention of and feel awful if you're ignored.

Sorry to tell you but Russia has only 8500 active nukes, while the U.S has 7700. The ones you are counting are ones that have been decommissioned. However, the U.S has had mroe tests with nukes, nearly double the amount of actual tests. The U.S has a lot more powerful nukes then Russia.
User avatar #34 to #12 - troflmao (11/23/2013) [-]
I thought only about ~4500 nukes were "ready-to-use" in the world? I may be wrong. Also, Israel has never said it has nukes, we just assume.

There was only one Tsar Bomb actually tested and that was at 50mt. They've designed and will most likely be pressured into making the Tsar Bomb mk 2 which is at 100mt

I'm sorry, are we talking about something other than "sto"?
User avatar #102 to #94 - TheCrow (11/24/2013) [-]
This is a slang use of the word. It's intentionally misspelled. I'm firmly aware that sto is not a word in Russian, namely because the letter S as it is does not exist in that alphabet, and t is written differently.

You may nitpick at the explanation but it remains the same, they just took out a letter for compatibility with the word "wat" which is an English slang for what. Bro it's not a difficult concept.
User avatar #103 to #102 - dagreatmax (11/25/2013) [-]
well I know that wat=wut=what but sto doesn't sound anywhere near like shto

You know what we could use these for? Project Orion! Finally, we could build a ship that could achieve about 10% the speed of light!
User avatar #72 to #70 - thelordofrepost (11/23/2013) [-]
lel, the only viable way to launch Orion would be from the moon. It doesn't matter how clean the bombs are, you be absolutely destroying wherever you launched from, also ruining the surrounding areas.
User avatar #76 to #72 - thelastamerican (11/23/2013) [-]
Bikini atoll is already irradiated. If we really wanted to we could launch form there. Also, we could launch from earth orbit. Just haul up the pieces with Russian rockets because the US is no longer producing shuttles.
User avatar #77 to #76 - thelordofrepost (11/23/2013) [-]
People are already living in the Bikini atoll already but the Russian rockets aren't a bad idea. Also lot's of private corporations are getting into space travel, the only problem is the government probably wouldn't just lend them/let them make nukes.
User avatar #90 to #77 - thelastamerican (11/23/2013) [-]
If there are people living in the place where they detonated the largest US weapon ever then the effects can't be all that terrible. Nukes can be used for a peaceful purpose, but we're going to let them sit in a warehouse somewhere and let them gather dust instead? I find this to be a terrible idea.
User avatar #95 to #90 - thelordofrepost (11/23/2013) [-]
I'm just saying that project orion isn't really politically feasible. I think it's a great idea to use them for a space ship.
User avatar #97 to #95 - thelastamerican (11/23/2013) [-]
We can build ships that are small airports. I refuse to believe we can't build something this simple. I mean, other than the deharmonized recoil plate we already have everything we could possibly want or need to build this thing.
#85 to #70 - joethebeast (11/23/2013) [-]
too bad a treaty between the US and Russia in the cold war bans the detonating of nuclear weapons in space, plus the shockwave from a nuke detonated in L.E.O. would have some pretty bad effects on satellites and stuff, i do think that project Orion is a great idea, but it would take a ton of resources and work, and the worlds so ass backwards right now that not enough people would support an interstellar mission, i hope mankind leaves the solar system in our lifetime, i would love to see pictures sent back from another star and new planets
