listen noob,

at the end of WWII there came a huge crack in Europe that pretty much divided it in two parts, the "soviet part" with east Germany and all other Balkan countries and ****, and a democratic part where America made it rain every once in a while by giving support and stuff.

also, Germany was split in 2 an east and a west side, in the east side, the DDR, life was pretty much ****** and you couldn't get to the other side to enjoy free democratic life, nor could you buy and sell whatever you wanted in the DDR, because soviet union =).

in this comic, several Balkan countries under the soviet banner tried to fight themselves out of the Warsaw pact, the pact pretty much meant that they were gonna be little soviet slave nations that needed to provide to the (glorious) mother land, which is Russia of course, or better known as the Soviet Union.

as an example Czechoslovakia is just trying to escape but of course the USSR wont let anyone leave.

In the 1960s Czechoslovakia had a new government under Mr Dubcek, who started to promote "socialism with a human face". The country was opening up, the people were starting to talk openly and the borders were opening to travel and trade. The goal however was not to start a democracy, simply a modern version of socialism without the crazy censorship and executions. The Soviet Union took note of this and called in the whole czechoslovakian government to explain what the freck is going on. The negotiations were going smoothly, until a group of politicians, old communists who were afraid for their butts in the reformed republic, who have been previously in contact with the KGB to plan ahead, excused themself for a toilet break, during which they wrote a letter to the Soviet governement. In this letter they named Dubcek&co as traitors trying to stage a revolution and break off from the eastern block. The Soviet Union of course used this as an excuse, and without further investigation Czechoslovakia was invaded in 1968 by the forces of Warsaw pact. The Czechoslovakians of course felt betrayed and pretty pissed, so it met a wave of public protests and street fighting during which dozens of people died and hundreds were wounded. The Soviet forces and their puppet governemnt then started a new wave of executions and censorship. The Soviet occupation lasted 20 years until the fall of the Soviet Union.

Similar scenario happened prior to this in Hungary, where the death tolls however reached much higher.

I'll give it a shot:

This is about the time when a new president, Imre Nagy, came to power in Hungary. He was a more moderate communist than his predecessor, and wanted to leave the Warsaw past. The Soviets didn't want to lose the safety of this buffer state and invaded (with tanks) to keep Hungary in the pact.

Czechoslovakia, I think, had at some point quite a liberal economy, despite being communist in name. They still supported the Soviet Union and remained in the Warsaw pact, which is why Russia spared them for a while. I think they intervened later, but I don't know the details. Could be increased Soviet troops and supporters.

Spoiler alert. The reason why he says this to Poland is because 14 years later they became the first country to truly soften up their ideologies after the invasion of Czechoslovakia with Lech Walesa and the establishment of the trade union "Solidarity" in Poland, the first "independent" trade organization.
