I'm an american, and I only drive manual, the only time I would ever drive an automatic, is on a very long drive late at night back home after stealing a car.
Except for the fact that Americans invented ******* muscle cars...
Manual transmission only existed because automatic transmissions were too complicated and unreliable (and did not exist during the time)
There is nothing wrong with an automatic, newer cars are quite dependable with newer automatic transmission technologies.
I still drive a manual nissan hardbody 4x4 though.
Heh thanks. My dad gave it to me, it was his first car, when he came to america. The bumpers were all rusting, the paint looked horrible, I rebuilt the engine, new bumpers, new paintjob, new suspension, and a turbo. At least I am not a rice-burner lol
That Vee engine diagram is so wrong... Never do 2 pistons hit at the same time, that is just a waste of fuel. If you drove manual, you would have known that.
I'm Spanish and I drive a manual 16 years old Volkswagen Polo. I just know one person who drives manual and only because he's physically handicapped and can't drive manual.
Can anybody answer why do Americans prefer automatic and Europeans manual?
I live in America and everyone in my family who drives, drives a manual (6 people).
My dad grew up around cars and so we have a lot, mostly VW and Ford.
He owns 54 cars, 5 of which are automatic.
I drive a 2000 Passat Wagon and I get usually 28 mpg, it's manual
My friend drives a 2002 Jetta, and he usually gets 22, it's automatic.
We have 2 Jettas, my Passat, 2 focusi, 2 explorers, 2 expeditions, 1, escape, 1 ranger, 1 E-350, 2 broncos, 1 Mustang II, 1 Maverick, 2 volvos (a '84 and a '79), 2 ford F-250s ('73 and '76), 1 F100, 2 F600s, 1 F500, 3 Microbuses, 1 '84 audi (unsure of the model), 2 customlines, 1 falcon, 1 comet, 1 old econoline, 3 dune buggies, a moterhome, and 17 VW bugs.
When my sister was driving her explorer she ****** up the transmission and my dad had to fix it, and my other sister's focus had a little trouble idling at one point, but no they never give us much problems. Or if there's a problem my dad fixes it.
The exception is the escape which spontaneously combusted and then my sister crashed it three months later and fried the engine.
Yeah sorry about that.
Keep in mind the average worth of these cars is $900
And I saved for a year and a half to buy my car because my dad refused to buy me a car after the way my sisters treated theirs.
My dad also was really really poor as a kid, and has worked really hard to get to where he is now.
yeah, that wasn't an angry observation, I just find it kinda funny to see such opposites.
I was lucky and my parents bought me my car (~$800) but then my dad's truck **** the bed and he can't afford a new one at the moment (of course his stubbornness in what he wants doesn't help)
but yeah, that's pretty cool. I'd like to learn more about cars so I can get old pieces of **** and make them actually useful. there's a nice looking Pontiac Formula (I'd say probably 70's or so, not entirely sure) that's been sitting in someone's yard for years. may be beyond fixing, but it would still be cool to try
Yeah that's how my dad got most of our older cars, he just drove by some house one day and was like "oh look at that car just sitting there. I wonder how much they want for it?"
New they are f*ing expensive in comparision to most asian cars.
If you want a cheap VW buy a Skoda. It's the same technique and quality, just a bit other designed.
I said "not too high". They are expensive, of course. But they last much longer than others. My car is 16 years old as I said and have never broken yet (just some minor fixes have been needed). I think it could last another 8 years.
I'd have a guess that most of the people saying Manual live in less populated areas or enjoy driving and those saying Automatic live in heavily populated areas with stop/start traffic or see a car as transport
In Berlin, you can reach every destination in half the time you would take with a car by using public transport. One should think that would lessen the traffic jam, but that's not happening at all
The funny thing is where I live there is just one public transport: bus. And we don't have special lanes for buses so if there's traffic, you'll get stuck whether you drive or use public transport. Add to the mixture expensive prices and unpunctuality and the result is that nobody likes public transport and the only ones using them are the ones who simply can't drive (too young, too old, car under reparations, etc.)
Americans prefer automatic mostly because the majority of used cars you will find are automatic, they are usually cheaper than a manual, and we are mostly raised on automatic so that's the only way we know how.
That'd answer why they prefer them NOW. But I'm still wondering when did they adapt themselves to prefer automatic over manual.
Here, for example, used cars are basically manual and we're raised to drive manual cars.
So in the USA you do the driver's licence in a car with automatic? I think you can do that in my country (Czech Rep) too, but then you are restricted to automatics only - it's written in your driving licence. Manual is considered normal here.
Are you ******* kidding me? What's the point of driving automatic anyway? The car does all the woek for you... it's not the same.
Plus the manutention expenses just seem ridiculous.
It's not even that hard.
Paddle shifters. With that setup you can set it to automatic when you are lazy, and shift more efficiently than you ever could in a manual when you want.
******** . Anyone who knows how to drive will tell you that when you drive an automatic you use your right foot for both by keeping your heel planted between them and pivoting your foot.
What?
That's silly, it gives you bad feedback and poor force application.
You can't drive on a racetrack and apply the needed braking force by keeping your ankle twisted all the time.
You don't pivot your foot, you move it from one pedal to the other.
And left-foot braking gives you much better reaction time, as you don't have to move your feet so much.
A) We're talking about standard driving, not racing.
B) The entire point is to reduce the chance of braking and accelerating at the same time. The proper way to brake an auto is to take your foot off of the gas to decelerate and then use the same foot to apply the brake.
a) You replied to a comment that explicitly said "professional driving", aka race technique, so we are indeed talking racing.
b) I am aware of that, the other drawbacks are that the left foot (resting on the the brake pedal) might push it down and light up the brake lights while accelerating, and that you can't push against the floor to brace yourself during heavy braking (the harness solves this issue).
Anyway, left-foot braking is very common in both rallying and one-seater/prototype racing, especially so because most formula/prototype pilots come from Kart racing.
"Professional driving school" is incredibly ambiguous, it sounded like you meant a school that teaches driving in a professional manner, not a school for professional drivers.
Oh, sorry, I'm not much of an English speaker, I'm actually Italian.
You're right, it could also mean truck driving school.
I'd like to find a school that teaches driving in a non-professional manner.
Anyway, cheers.
are you ******* retarded!? never ever anyone ******* EVER ANYWHERE TEACHES YOU TO ******* BREAK WITH LEFT FOOT YOU ******* IDIOT! RETARD! MORON! that wouldnt even be comfortable in any ******* way
rally uses manuals or at least semi manuals they have ******* clutch you ******* retard.
I was just always taught that you use your right foot for the gas and break and to only use your left foot for the clutch to reduce the chance of accidentally hitting the gas and the break at the same time :/ then again I do have abnormally large feet
I've seen it happen- guy on news, his car falls through ice and he just says " **** ...okay" in English. he actually makes the effort to switch language
But....That Flag isn't the one of the 3. Reich.
That's the Flag of the Federal Republic and the Weimar Republic.
Those two never surrendered, because they never had any defensiv wars.
I really prefer manual and I like switching gears and it feels like I'm more in control and all this **** . Tried automatic a couple of times but it feels kind of weird.
is it bad that i cunt dreive munual? i cun unly drieve wit left lag, right lag is parilyzedongerfied, i ned drovers licsenonce to go 2 califourniuh 2 see my hot 11/10 gf, ps she is real hot grill George Foreman (the best kinda grill)
That post was an hour before mine. Besides, how does anyone know I didn't just post what you posted claiming I was a samefag? Maybe I am the only person on this entire site to be posting anonymously to make it look like people post without an account
Automatics are a bore to drive, and its uneconomical, and it over revs and pisses me off been as i know it needs to change up but the cars like, nahh in a min
I drive an automatic.
I'd rather have a manual, but honestly, the only time it really matters is in a track race.
They don't "over rev", because they're ******* automatics. They change gears according to the RPMs, so it is impossible to redline an automatic unless you have faulty throttle sensors and such.
In all, both manual and auto have their ups and downs. Most would rather have a manual, and I agree, but don't be a jackass saying that all automatics suck ass. Because that's not true at all. There are a lot of highly respected drag racers running autos because they are quicker.
cons:
>Its next to impossible to eat or drink driving in the city
>Obviously requires more skill
>More room for human error to damage the transmission, and wear over time you don't get with hydrolic pressure and a computer doing it
>Its a rougher ride, especially with smaller engines
pros:
>More horsepower output because manuals don't have that power-robbing slush box called a "torque converter"
>10 times easier to rebuild or service a manual
>more attentive toward the road
>way cheaper to purchase
I honestly don't understand where this stereotype comes from.... both my parents know how to drive a stick, as well as the rest of my immediate family. (Don't know about the rest since I just met them for the first time a year ago.)
And half out my friends that I hang out after my classes can drive stick. Don't know how this got started.
Actually the only stereo type I really like to point out is the fact that they have to make fun of Americans...
It's like every euro fag has an ameri-joke and they can't wait to share it with you to see how "mad" you get lol...
Like i said stereotypes are fun...
Actually where I live if you can't drive a manual shift, then you're kind of a pussy..
Most people I know that drive an auto would rather have a standard, but can't afford to buy one..
Manual shift is needed here mostly because we live in a very mountainous region, and in my opinion it's a lot easier to crawl up hills with a 4x4 in a low gear....
So not in my area, maybe the city slickers...
