It's weird to always see that The Soviet Union/Russia is always portrayed as being cold, and having that as an advantage, when in fact their soldiers froze to death in Finland just two years before Germany invaded.

Pic related, Finnish soldiers showing frozen body of a Red army soldier.

Idk maybe because all throughout history they've won wars because the armies that invade them get caught in the winter and ******* die before they can get their asses out?
Like with Napoleon for example.

Come on guys history isnt hard.
User avatar #2 to #1 - brobathehutt ONLINE (09/21/2013) [-]
It's still their advantage, they know the terrain better and they find ways to stay warm. Also don't forget that most Russian leaders could give a **** less about their people, and that's the other main reason they can't be invaded.

The strongest ones survived and the legend began
User avatar #32 to #1 - Encarna (09/21/2013) [-]
It wasn't so much that the cold was advantageous to the Russians, it's more that it was disadvantageous to the German's. With the Russians being on home turf they could resupply easier and warm themselves easier too.

Invading any country immediately puts you at a disadvantage as you don't know the lay of the land, Russians invading Finland and experiencing the slightly less, the same or more cold than they would normally experience doesn't mean a lot when they can't combat it properly.
User avatar #35 to #1 - aiwendel (09/22/2013) [-]
That's true, but the cold did help them against both Hitler and Napoleon before that. Russia has its own automatic defense mechanism, that being the cold. And anyway in Finland they were the ones invading, so they were disadvantageous.

They probably weren't as furiously pissed off at Finland as they were at Germany.

I loved the Soviets during WWII, but can I just honestly say, whenever Finland was in a battle, they made anyone, even the Soviet bear cry home.

As an American, I'll say this. I will remember and always respect The Great Northern War of both Sweden and Finland.

Hakkaa päälle!!!!

Also i hear a saying: where there's two trees, behind another of those trees there's a Finn behind it with a rifle.
User avatar #49 to #48 - doktorpaj (09/22/2013) [-]
Is it a Finnish proverb? If so, could you post it in Finnish as well?
User avatar #53 to #49 - newdevyx (09/22/2013) [-]
Bad translation to English was that, but in Finnish it would go like this: Jos näet kaksi puuta vierekkäin, toisen takana on varmasti suomalainen kiväärin kanssa. that means we are actually quite close to the nature and when **** goes wild like it did in 1939, Finnish soldiers could easily fight in forests. I have heard the same about Arabs, but about sand, not forests.
User avatar #54 to #53 - newdevyx (09/22/2013) [-]
Nowadays it wouldn't be any different if **** would go wild, we could survive in Finnish forests.

2 I think the main reasons the soviets ****** Germany over where A. they got there **** together B Hitler decided he could be better than an actual military strategist C they never stopped making anything from bullets to bombs to men to vodka they made it if they could and never stopped

It wasn't just a war for the Soviet Union, it was survival. I respect the Soviets during WW2 greatly, but like Germany, they were ill-prepared for their own winter in Finland.

Finland doesn't **** around that's for sure plus the soviets where asshats in the beginning too they allied with Nazi Germany and helped carve up Poland and then set their sites on finland only to get the **** kicked outta them
User avatar #91 to #90 - alexandervascus (09/22/2013) [-]
Well they allied because the Germans called themselves National Socialists. Communism is an offshoot of socialism so they thought they had something in common. In fact the Third Reich just called themselves national socialists so they could kill socialist and communist sympathizers.

That makes way more sense. I thought he said "Fu a shi ku" and I had no idea what was going on.
User avatar #40 to #17 - sirgawain (09/22/2013) [-]
also, that's not a "shi." It's a small "tsu."
User avatar #23 to #17 - xxiixx (09/21/2013) [-]
The ツ is smaller so it doubles the consonant sound of the next one, here the ク. So it is Fu a kku.
User avatar #27 to #23 - Nihatclodra ONLINE (09/21/2013) [-]
It says ファック, with both the ア and ツ smaller. This makes the Fu into a Fa, and the Ku into a Kku: Thus he said "Fakku""

Ho **** , i have a story to tell you.
Just this past march, back when winter was still refusing to leave, the weather station predicted a massive snowstorm. 40+ cm. on the wednesday. The high school, which has 3000 sniveling little brats to look after, immediately went for a full closure. The school day ended on tuesday without a cloud in the sky and +1c. This is when i started chuckling to myself. Then the next day arrived. And i was howling with laughter as the school closed for a snowday. The roads were **************** . Even the salt from the previous weeks snow dried out and caked the road in a white dust.
Only 30 people went to the school. And all they did was go to the library and go on youtube or facebook. The entire day i couldnt look outside without laughing, "ITS A SNOWDAY!!!"

Currently living in Sudbury (city in Northern Ontario), if the temperature goes down to -40 or 50 (which is extremely rare, but it did for a few days last winter) you just have to plan ahead: wake up earlier to give yourself more commuting time and plug in your car's block heater overnight so the fluids don't freeze. It's not really a big deal (unless you're someone with a disability, or elderly).

World war 2 discussion?

One idea for how to use the original 3 nukes (or 2, the 1st one was Los Alamos) was to tell Japan that we were going to nuke an unpopulated island, let them watch, then hope they surrendered, but this was dubbed a bad use of the then limited amount of bombs the allies had.
Another idea was to bomb the beachheads very shortly before invading the island so as to soften their defenses. This was before we were aware of radiation, and several additional casualties on both side would have been lost because of this.
