Foongus & Amoonguss. It literally just spells "fungus among us"
Archeops. A shortened (and misspelled) version of Archaeopteryx, which it is a copy of.
Bisharp. Bisexual Bishop that is Sharp.
Braviary. Brave Avian (bird)
Cottonee. it is cottony.
Cubchoo. its a cub that sneezes (achoo)
Excadrill. it excavates and drills.
Litwick. a wick that has been lit.
Klang. the sound this pokemon would make if you dropped it.
Gurdurr. a Girder which he holds. also adds 'Hurr' into it.
woobat. its a bat that woos people.

Meanwhile, in G1:
Pikachu: Pika (the sound of an electric spark in Japanese) + chu (the sound a mouse makes)
Nidoran: "Nidoran may be derived from needle. It may also come from cnidocyte, a type of venomous cell responsible for the stings delivered by stinging animals, most notably jellyfish. Alternatively, it may be based on ni (two) or nido (two times/two degrees) referring to the two distinct evolutionary lines with similar names and traits. Also, the Japanese word ran is translated as orchid in English. Orchids are flowers that can be purple or blue, these being the same colors as the male and female evolutionary forms of Nidoran, respectively.

It just feels like they put more effort into the older generations.

If not the actual pokemon, at least the names sound much better.
