I've always wondered, why were they assholes? what did ash do to make him into such a prick?

The tv-show was based on the first games. And if your pokemon got leveled up too high compared to the number of trainer badges you had, the pokemon would stop listening to you and just do whatever he wanted. which is what happened with Charmeleon/Charizard. They got to a too high level for Ash.

Charmander was originally another trainer's Pokemon.

I think Charmeleon got tired of Ash dicking around and not growing up.
That's also why he left him when he became a Charizard.
Ash is a great trainer, if he works with weepingbells and diglet's

not if he works with Charizards and PrimeApes

Charizard wouldn't listen even when he had 8 badges.

It only took a life threatening incident for him to trust Ash, haha.

On his way to Unova Ash had a miraculous genetic mutation that resulted in a brownish color appearing around the pupils of both eyes, the mutation seems to have occurred because of the constant exposure of electro-magnetic radiation from his overpowered rat-mouse that sits on his shoulder, the radiation seems to have cause a different mutation to his pituitary gland stunting his growth dramatically. He also changed into a shitty outfit which leads me to believe that he had some mutation of the brain as well, causing to lose all memory of previous experiences, which would explain why he suddenly can no longer make any tactical commands based on previous battles.

It's all those souls he's been devouring to stay young.
