In Black and White, there's a bug/steel Pokemon. It has a fire-type natural predator.

Its pokedex entry says it grew its metal coat to protect against its natural predator.

Possibly the metal coating increases its HP and DEF/SP. DEF so that it actually poses more chances of survival in many cases.

It doesn't really matter how high your defenses are. If your shit gets hit with a STAB with 4x type bonus over your opponent, you're pretty much fucked.
